Job Summary
Organizational Status
Reports directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Wilfred Jefferies. Works with Research Associates, Postdoctoral Fellows, and Research Technicians involved in the assigned project.
Work Performed
- Assists in the amendment, design, development of protocols for animal research.
- Assists senior level lab members in establishing rodent autoimmune and neurological models.
- Plans and performs molecular and cellular biology assays of neurological and immune assays.
- Coordinates, monitors and ensures the implementation of procedures following federal and University guidelines and policies on animal welfare.
- Monitors health, behavior and welfare of laboratory animals, along with continuous awareness of current speciesspecific welfare issues, such as common signs of illness, pain, trauma or depression, in accordance with CCAC guidelines.
- Plans and performs animal research studies, including handling rodents, drug administration via sc, iv, ip and gavaging, disease model development in rodents, drug dose range finding, drug efficacy studies, and colony management.
- Performs necropsies, blood sampling and surgical procedures for animal work.
- Orders animals for upcoming studies and purchases supplies and drugs needed for experiments.
- Trains new research staff/trainees in animal work and ensure they are following animal welfare guidelines.
- Organizes and maintains detailed documentation of work and reporting results to the supervisor and members of the lab in a timely manner.
- Carries out other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Exercises judgement, responsibility, and initiative related to the welfare of animals.
Errors or incorrect decisions could jeopardize animal welfare, research progress, collaborations, finances and employee safety and adversely impact future project objectives and personnel.
Supervision ReceivedWorks under general supervision. Meets regularly with the project team to discuss progress and direction. In adding to PI supervision, additional supervision will be provided by Research Associates and Postdoctoral Fellows in the group.
Supervision Given
The Research technician will work as part of a team, may train other members of the research program and may direct the work of more junior members.
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
BSc in molecular biology, immunology, neurobiology, or related discipline preferred.
Experience with stereotaxic surgical techniques, experience working with and handling animals, autoimmune models, neurological models, rodent behavioural changes and behaviour testing within parameters of ethics protocols at all times.
Experience with molecular biological techniques and neurological assays and immunological assays as well as microscopy. Certifications in animal handling, anesthesia and/or surgical techniques preferred, and chemical safety certifications.Skills:
- Experience and/or working knowledge of husbandry and genotyping.
- Physically able to operate equipment (standing, sitting).
- Effective communication skills and ability to work with well others.
- Selfmotivated and take initiative to perform work when supervisors are not present.
- Willingness to learn basic computer skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to work within a multicultural environment.
- Demonstrate an interest in science and excellent record keeping skills.
