Your role


The provincial affairs reporter performs reporting and editorial assignments for web, radio, television and social media that typically involve the gathering, writing and presentation of information related to provincial affairs - specifically but not exclusively the B.C.

legislature, the government / opposition parties and politicians (both in office and out), as well as the public service and Crown corporations.


This position helps set the agenda for CBC B.C.'s political coverage, identifying the stories that matter to people who live here.

Under the CBC News Strategy all work must abide by CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices. Advice and guidance are available but initiative and independent judgment are expected. Work can involve coordination of the activities of others, and close cooperation with multiple content units is essential.

Please note this role is located in Victoria, B.C.- University degree (or the equivalent) in journalism, communications, political science or a related field- At least five years' related experience in news (web and/or radio and/or TV experience)- Experience preparing and delivering reports on multiple platforms daily- Good knowledge of newsroom operations and editorial practices- Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada's mandate and Journalistic Standards and Practices- Knowledge of the province of British Columbia- Contact network including the various provincial stakeholders- Valid driver's license; able to travel across BC- Must be able to travel abroad- Proven experience with access to information requests- Proven ability to work in a multiplatform environment- Able to work independently- Resourceful self-starter- People skills and drive- Interpersonal and communication skills- Able to plan, organize and coordinate day-to-day work so as to meet tight deadlines; able to work well under pressure- Able to prepare and draft programming copy, and rewrite news copy in good broadcasting style- Enterprising approach to interviewing and fact gathering- Good communicator, able to write and tell stories clearly and effectively- Able to convey effectively to non-experts- Able to analyze and synthesize- Thorough; able to think critically- Solid command of social media
