Duties and Responsibilities:


Reporting to the Department Head, Research Support Services (RSS) and in collaboration with members of the Data Team, the incumbent works with other relevant team members to provide focussed support for statistical data and other aspects of quantitative and qualitative research methods in all disciplines.

The Specialist transforms, manipulates, and converts numeric data, and additionally creates metadata for various data collections and projects. The incumbent is a member of a Subject Area Team.

Performs other related duties as required.


Qualifications:


The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with statistical analysis software such as R, SPSS, Stata, SAS, NVivo, etc., required.
  • Demonstrated experience with Excel and FTP software required.
  • Demonstrated experience with Dataverse and/or other data repository systems.
  • Experience with research and survey design, and data collection/creation.
  • Experience conducting and/or supporting quantitative and qualitative research in an academic environment.
  • Familiarity with digital library metadata standards and protocols is desired but not essential.
  • Demonstrated experience with DDI preferred.
  • Public service and/or teaching experience an asset.
  • Experience in or desire to work in a busy public serviceoriented environment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, with the ability to express complex information succinctly and clearly to a lay audience.
  • Practical experience of developing and delivering training and supporting materials, including webbased documentation is desired but not essential.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment alongside Library staff, IT staff and the research community to deliver services.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to coordinate effectively a varied workload and competing priorities.
  • Able to work on own initiative.
  • A selfmotivated learner with a track record of continually updating skills.

In addition, the incumbent has:


  • Strong applied knowledge of social science statistical techniques, such as tests of significance, regression analysis, categorical data analysis, and analysis of variance;
  • Excellent analytical and problemsolving skills;
  • The ability to interpret questions and negotiate with clients to achieve mutually desired outcomes;
  • Demonstrated accuracy, attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks;
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with technology in a fastpaced environment while managing competing priorities;
  • Strong written and oral communication;
  • Ability to develop clear, concise, accurate technical documentation;
  • Strong userfocused service orientation;
  • Evidence of initiative, innovation and flexibility to respond to workflow demands;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with supervisors and colleagues in a culturally diverse and rapidly changing environment;
  • A willingness and ability to learn; and
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;

Education and Experience:


The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • Masters degree, with an emphasis on Social Science, advanced statistics and research.
  • Five years of related experience working in a research or academic setting required.
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical methods & analysis.
