We are hiring a full-time, permanent

Specialist, Indigenous Relations position working out of Edmonton, AB.


The Specialist, Indigenous Relations is accountable for ensuring EPCOR meets its obligations and commitments to Indigenous Nations and communities, enhances the relationship between EPCOR and Indigenous communities, and supports the implementation of EPCOR's Indigenous Relations initiatives within the company.


The Specialist will lead the development of capacity across EPCOR's lines of business and corporate services to deliver on the company's commitments to Indigenous engagement on initiatives, projects and operations.

In collaboration with internal stakeholders, EPCOR's Indigenous Relations Steering Committee, and the Government & Indigenous Relations team, the Specialist will advance equitable employment opportunities, creating an inclusive workplace, and supporting Indigenous business development.

The Specialist will, with support from their team, also advance internal policy discussions, build and maintain relationships with consultation offices, and track the commitments and actions.

This position may be eligible for EPCOR's hybrid work program.

What you'd be responsible for

  • Leading the achievement of EPCOR's certification in the CCAB Progressive Aboriginal Relations program.
  • Developing and implementing employee/contractor training to understand Indigenous relations, placebased histories, cultural norms, protocols, and EPCOR's Indigenous Employee Resource Group (SPIRIT).
  • Representing EPCOR to Indigenous Nations and their officials. Responding to input received from Indigenous communities, and making, documenting and keeping commitments. Seeking opportunities for Indigenous inclusion, cultural protection, and cultural revitalization.
  • Achieving continuous improvement and operation of the company's stakeholder management platform (Borealis) for Indigenous relationshipbuilding.
  • Supporting Canadian Government Relations and federallyfunded EPCOR projects by managing and advising on Indigenous relations files within the Federal Government scope.
  • Fostering longterm, positive relationships with key First Nations, Metis Nations/communities and other rightsholder advocacy groups.
  • Ensuring the Indigenous Monitoring Program remains an effective and meaningful tool of engagement and informationsharing with participating Indigenous communities.
  • Identifying opportunities to inform and influence public policy debates on relevant issues, and opportunities for commercial partnerships. Analyzing Indigenous utility policy issues and provide advice on those issues, citing implications and possible recommendations for EPCOR to implement.
  • Supporting and participating with EPCOR's Diversity & Inclusion framework program as it relates to National Indigenous Peoples Day and National Day for Truth & Reconciliation.
  • Pursuing these goals in collaboration with internal stakeholders, including EPCOR's Indigenous Relations Steering Committee, Government and Indigenous Relations team, and crossfunctional business teams.
What's required to be successful

  • Postsecondary degree in Indigenous studies, Anthropology, Arts, Humanities, Community Development, or a related discipline is required.
  • 5+ years of direct experience with Indigenous Relations, Government Relations or Public Affairs is required.
  • Expert knowledge of Indigenous histories and cultures within Treaties 6, 7 and 8, including protocols, governance, attitudes of engagement, and current rightsbased issues affecting Indigenous communities.
  • Ability to write and edit communications plans, engagement plans, and communication products.
  • Ability to use stakeholder management software or similar CRM.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, and experience presenting to small and large audiences.
  • Effective project management skills.
  • Effective at advising executive leaders on strategy and implementation, and representing the company to external partners and audiences.
  • Experience in the energy/utilities/linear infrastructure industry including experience with energy/utility regulators and government officials is preferred.
  • Knowledge of IAP2 engagement principles and standards is an asset.
  • Knowledge of archeological methods and processes is an asset
  • Ability to speak an Indigenous language is an asset
  • Ability to travel within Edmonton and outside of Alberta; physically attend and/or participate in the Monitoring Program and ability to participate in ceremonies.
  • Valid Drivers License as travel outside of Edmonton will be required.
