We are currently seeking a Chaplain to provide spiritual and religious care and support to inmates at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre.

This role will involve responsibility for maintaining a comprehensive, multi-faith chaplaincy program for inmates, their families, and staff.

Please note this position is regular, part time at 18.13 hours per week.

What can I expect to do in this role?:

  • Provide comprehensive religious services and spiritual care programs to inmates, their families, and staff
  • Coordinate and monitor a busy and involved multifaith program
  • Create new programs and coordinate spiritual activities
  • Build relationships and partnerships with community groups
  • Partner with local faith communities to establish programs to help inmates reintegrate into the community
  • Represent chaplaincy on institutional committees
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team made up of correctional staff, the healthcare department, and other professional staff
  • Other duties as required

How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:


  • You possess endorsement from a recognized Spiritual, Religious, Creed or Faith Group or Organization.

Note:
An endorsement may be an ordination or a letter of recommendation from a recognized Spiritual, Religious, Creed or Faith Group or Organization


Specialized Knowledge and Experience:


  • You have experience providing spiritual care programs and services within an institutional setting (such as health care, military, corrections, education, residential care, etc.)
  • You have applied knowledge of various faith groups, multidenominational groups, as well as religious beliefs and practices, which may be acquired through a combination of university, theological school, certification program, and/or professional experience
  • You have experience working collaboratively with various faith groups

Communication, Interpersonal and Counselling Skills:


  • You can interact effectively with inmates, families, staff, and volunteers
  • You have strong counselling skills to assist inmates and their families through issues and crisis

Organizational and Supervisory Skills:


  • You are able to plan, organize, implement and evaluate spiritual care programs and religious services
  • You have supervisory and coordination experience in order provide guidance, orientation, and training to volunteers, students and other spiritual and religious visitors

Other Skills:


  • You have analytical skills and good judgement to identify and resolve issues
  • You are able to work within the legislative framework, balancing confidentiality and the need to maintain the safety and security of staff and inmates
  • You have general understanding of the criminal justice system and correctional institutions in order to develop spiritual programming that meet inmate needs
