Position Summary:


Reporting to the Supervisor, Fleet Services, the Fleet Foreperson is responsible for planning, scheduling, assigning, inspection and corrective/preventative maintenance activities designed to service and maintain the municipal fleet or vehicles and equipment including scheduling of contractors to perform fleet activities.

As an integral team player, you will diagnose and repair a variety of automotive and heavy equipment (e.g., including pickups, trucks, construction and snow removal equipment, parks and road maintenance equipment).


Key Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for maintaining accurate service logs using Maximo and related inventory software
  • Assist/support other Fleet staff with the accurate and required use of Maximo and related inventory software
  • Receive and investigate emergency and other calls regarding fleet work activities and carry out authorized action
  • Train staff on the job
  • Plan daily work schedules and schedule staff and contractors
  • Maintain cost control based on approved budgets
  • Submit reports regarding injury investigations, equipment, property and equipment damage
  • Ensure that work is performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, City policies, procedures and practices and report any contravention
  • Communicate on a regular basis with supervisory staff on any related matter, both verbally and written
  • Assist other sections as required and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Available for winter standby
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:


  • High School Diploma
  • Automotive Service Technician (310S) Certificate
  • Truck Coach Technician (310T) Certificate
  • Commercial Vehicle Wheel Service Certificate
  • Propane Training Certificate is an asset
  • Eligible to be a motor vehicle inspection mechanic with the MTO
  • Minimum 10 years' experience maintaining a diverse fleet of vehicles including small engines (municipal fleet maintenance experience is an asset)

Required Skills/Knowledge:


  • Demonstrated experience in a supervisory capacity in a unionized environment.
  • Knowledge and experience with onboard vehicle computerized systems, electrical systems, heavy equipment (e.g., snow plows, sanders, back hoes, etc.); air and hydraulic brakes and hydraulic systems (pumps/cylinders)
  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and an awareness of conditions that affect employee safety
  • Excellent verbal, written interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to deal effectively with tact and diplomacy with all levels of staff and the public are essential
  • Ability to operate cutting torches, electric arc welder and MIG welder will be considered an asset
  • Must possess own hand tools (annual tool allowance provided)
  • Ontario Class "DZ" Driver's License in good standing and must provide a satisfactory current Drivers Abstract from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO)
  • Requires satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check
