NOTICE
All students applying for student positions at CNL must be returning to full-time studies upon completion of their work term. Exceptions will be made for students who require a work term in order to graduate. Students must submit a resume, cover letter, and copy of an up-to-date transcript by the posting close date of May 26th, 2024 @11:59pm to ensure consideration for student employment. The employment period generally runs from the beginning of September to the end of December (for a 4 month work term).

Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC) which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security".

Reactor Physics Student
The Advanced Fuels and Reactor Physics Branch develops technologies for fabrication of advanced nuclear fuels, measures fuel material properties, plans and conducts reactor experiments and simulation studies, and provides operations support for research reactors, including the Zero Energy Deuterium (ZED-2) reactor at CNL, and the university-based SLOWPOKE reactors.

The Reactor & Radiation Physics Section provides support on the neutronic aspect of nuclear systems, often manifested as neutron-nuclear reactions, which includes nuclear fission and its subsequent nuclear reactions. The main tools used by the group are validated reactor physics codes and the ZED-2 reactor, a heavy water critical facility with a high degree of flexibility. The group works with industry and government stakeholders, providing expert advice on the neutronics of the full lifecycle of reactor systems, from design and safety, to fuel burnup and management, fuel cycle studies, and projection of nuclear waste inventories at the end of their lifecycle.
Today, the main purpose of the ZED-2 research reactor is to continue support of the safe operation of the Canadian fleet of nuclear reactors and to support the development of advanced reactor concepts, many of which are under the category of small modular reactors. The most important role of ZED-2 is to provide experiment data for validation of neutronics codes. The student can expect to be involved in many aspects of the experimental program, such as designing experimental apparatus, documenting experimental plans, overseeing executions, analyzing data, and documenting/presenting results of reactor measurements.

What we are looking for:

• Laboratory experience is essential, as is experience conducting scientific experiments.

• Must be able to work as part of a team.

• Must have excellent oral and written (especially technical writing) communication skills.

• Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

• Modeling and/or simulation experience would be considered an asset.

• Working knowledge of one of C, C++, MATLAB, Python, would be an asset.

Are you in this field / program?
Applicants should be students in an Engineering Physics, Physics, Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Engineering or similar program at a recognized university. Students having completed at least three to four years of study are preferred.
