Trans Mountain operates Canada's only pipeline system transporting oil products to the West Coast.

We deliver approximately 300,000 barrels of petroleum products each day through 1,150 kilometres of pipeline in Alberta and British Columbia, and 111 kilometres of pipeline in Washington state.

As a Laboratory Technician with Trans Mountain, you'll have the opportunity to work with a progressive and fast-paced group of professionals in the Edmonton terminal, reporting to the Supervisor Product Quality and Measurement.

This position is based at our Edmonton Terminal.


Ensure all required hydrocarbon-based custody transfer samples are obtained, properly handled, and analyzed in accordance with recommended API and ASTM guidelines and standards.

Ensure the results are applied to the appropriate TMPL software.

Perform quality and measurement related duties in support of meeting and reporting accurate petroleum measurement quantities and conduct investigations to resolve quality and measurement issues.


Key Deliverable/Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all petroleum sampling required for custody transfer and quality monitoring analysis according to TMPL's commitments as outlined in the Rules and Regulations, Service Standards and Commodity Approval Process, as well as customer requests.
  • Conduct laboratory analysis, report results and flag results that exceed stated specifications.
  • Initiate and conduct investigations of any laboratory results that do not meet Trans Mountain Pipeline (TMPL) stated specifications or are out of typical range.
  • Collect spot and composite samples and dispose of expired samples according to the required holding time.
  • Facilitate thirdparty analysis for additional testing and conduct audits and assessments of thirdparty laboratories for testing practices.
  • Monitor performance of quality and measurement assets such as inline water analyzers, viscometers and sampling systems.
  • Submit work orders and coordinate with Instrument Technicians for quick remediation to ensure no missed custody transfer transactions.
  • Participate in monthly department meetings to discuss new/ongoing issues and contribute solutions.
  • Attend industry workshops, seminars and conferences to enhance measurement & quality job knowledge and stay up to date with industry best practices.
  • Ensure efficient operation of TMPL Laboratory by performing daily quality control, calibration and maintenance of lab equipment, keeping adequate stock of laboratory supplies, chemicals and standards, and creating and updating internal procedures.

Requirements:


  • Postsecondary education and training with a focus in Petroleum and Chemical testing would be preferred.
  • Certification and training as a Lab Technologist is considered an asset.
  • 6 to 9 years' experience in crude oil properties, lab instrument maintenance, software trend analysis, experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience working in an operating facility is preferred.
  • Specialized courses or training specific to laboratory testing of crude oil and refined products would be an asset (API or ASTM).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Must be a team player with a positive attitude.
  • Selfmotivated, capable of performing tasks with mínimal supervision.
  • Able to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail is critical.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle strict deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment.
  • Must be a problem solver with the ability to find resolutions.
