Summary:


The Health and Safety Coordinator coordinates health and safety program processes and activities to assist the team in maintaining compliance, mitigating and managing health and safety risks and improving related performance for Fresh Start Foods Ontario (Milton, Ottawa & London) and J G Rive-Sud Fruits & Legumes Quebec (Chambly).

The health and safety coordinator must be knowledgeable of all health & safety legislation and requirements for both Ontario and Quebec.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:


Health and Safety Leadership

  • Acts as the first pointofcontact for all health and safety inquiries and incidents.
  • Provides guidance to team members on health and safety matters, and escalates inquiries, where appropriate.
  • Coordinates the implementation of health and safety programs along with related processes, procedures and resources.
  • Maintain a safety committee in each of your designated locations with a representation from each department work group, including Management.
  • Participate in the review of departmental operating policies and procedures. Identify discrepancies in company policies and procedures.

Workers Compensation & Incident Investigation**- Coordinates incident investigation and resolution, including providing probable causes of incidents and recommendations for resolution.

  • Complete worker's compensation forms and manage all claims in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Followup with the employee upon return to work after a workplace injury to formally document that the employee understands his/her work restrictions. Monitor progress weekly.
  • Maintain injury and illness records (OHS Log). Monitor the OHS statistics (incident rate) monthly and report the information to Human Resources
  • Conducts regular inspections of facilities to mitigate any Health & safety issues and/or concerns.

Documentation

  • Create and maintain documentation including, but not limited to, inspection checklists and safety training materials.
  • Responsible for coordinating onsite safety inspections, job observations, health, safety audits and other types of reviews for the purpose of monitoring compliance to health regulations and identifying risks.
  • Developing emergency response procedures for the designated facilities.

Audit Compliance, Data Maintenance & Reporting

  • Acts as a liaison when a Ministry of Labour (MOL) inspector visits and rapidly respond to any orders imposed on the facility
  • Assists in the audit of compliance records and all health and safety data
  • Prepares and distributes various health and safety related reports including but not limited to incident reports.

General Duties

  • Order and distribute all health and safety related materials, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and training materials to all employees.
  • Assist with the Emergency Evacuation and review annually for recommended improvements.
  • Coordinate yearly inhouse fire extinguisher inspections.
  • Setup forklift training and certification for all operators.
  • Keep first aid cabinets stocked with first aid supplies and eye wash.
  • Ensure policies and procedures for health and safety fulfill all food safety regulatory as well as SQF requirements.
  • Perform any other duties as required.

Qualifications:


  • Years of

Experience Required: 2-4 years experience with demonstrated skills in Health and Safety programs, Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety will be an asset.


  • Proven ability to ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety laws and regulations for Ontario & Quebec
  • Bilingual (English and French)
  • Completion of Postsecondary Education in Safety or a related discipline will be an asset.
  • Strong communication skills along with some ability to influence stakeholders to develop collaborative solutions.
  • Strong administrative skills along with ability to maintain and report accurate data.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Able to work independently but provide strong support to the team,
  • Frequent trips to be expected to Ontario and Quebec sites
  • Demonstrated expertise with Google Workspace (docs, sheets, meet, drive)
  • Familiarity with produce or food manufacturing operations processes and food safety will be an asset.
