Position Summary:


Reporting to the Manager of Sustainability, the Program Assistant will be involved in both office and external outreach programs to assist the delivery of sustainable strategic priorities, such as the Environment Strategy, Urban Forest Management Plan, Environmental Communication Strategy, Climate Change Framework and Community Energy & Emissions Plan.

This work contributes to the Section's efforts to integrate and promote sustainability throughout all facets of City work. The incumbent will assist with program coordination, background research and administrative support of various sustainability projects.

The Program Assistant will also attend public engagement events during and outside of regular business hours and provide technical support and research assistance to the Manager and other Sustainability staff.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Assist with coordination and implementation of public outreach and education initiatives
  • Attend public engagement events during and outside of regular business hours
  • Prepare promotional and educational content for digital and print media
  • Develop and update tracking of climate considerations in City projects
  • Conduct data analysis and reporting of environmental scorecard data
  • Background research in support of urban forestry and natural heritage projects
  • Conduct environmental constraint mapping for capital projects
  • Provide technical support and research assistance to the Manager and team
  • Possibility of field work and site visits to support sustainability programming

Education and Experience:


  • Recent graduate with a university degree or postgraduate diploma in Environmental Studies, Sustainability Management, Environmental Planning, Environmental Science or related discipline
  • Experience conducting research and analysis, community engagement, implementing field work, report writing and presentations
  • Master's program and municipal experience would be considered an asset

Required Skills/Knowledge:


  • Knowledge of environmental policies, sustainable practices, municipal government processes and organization
  • Experience in environmental outreach or activities and multistakeholder partnerships
  • Basic project management and problem solving skills with ability to multitask
  • Good organizational and office administration skills with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to understand complex systems and synthesize information effectively
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
  • Team player with effective interpersonal skills and ability to promote and maintain good client and public relations
  • Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision

Other requirements/assets:

  • Available to work evenings and weekends when necessary
  • Demonstrate the City's corporate values of care, collaboration, courage and service
  • Possess CSA certified steel toe safety boots for fieldwork
  • Possess a valid Ontario Class "G" driver's license
  • Access to a vehicle to conduct some outreach activities (mileage compensated)
  • Proof of vehicle insurance
