    NAIT's Centre for Sensors and System Integration(CSSI) is a Technology Access Centre (TAC) staffed with professionalresearchers to support Alberta businesses on Applied Research & Developmentprojects that deliver a new product, an improved service, or a more efficientprocess. Businesses across all majorAlberta industry sectors have identified digital transformation as being thecritical next step in their operational evolution. CSSI helps address their challenges throughprototyping activities in preparation for later commercialization, which inturn enhance their productivity, competitiveness, and innovation. We may be automating a manual process,trialing the use of existing technology in an innovative way, sourcing an ideafrom another industry and developing a tool to meet the application, ordesigning and building something novel.

    CSSI is lookingto expand the team's technical expertise to meet growing industry needs in theareas of software-hardware interfacing, automated control systems, datamanagement, and customized graphical user interfacing for complex backendoperations. The ideal candidate has strong knowledge on full stack developmentand have practical experiences in software applications development and systemsintegration. This position requires expertise and skills of managing databasesfrom real-time data and query-based reporting. Solid knowledge on integratingmultiple databases into a common platform and interfacing with hardware systemsacross windows and Linux based subsystems will be required.

    Key Responsibilities:

  • Writinggood quality embedded software. The successful candidate will be workingalongside our experienced programmers to build and test firmware solutions forour clients. They should be interested in programming firmware for low powerdevices in languages such as C and C++.
  • Technicalmanagement and teamwork. Thisencompasses the execution of applied research and development projects as partof a larger team, to deliver the new technologies, systems, and products thatare requested.
  • Writingtechnical documentation and organizing technical resources as needed to ensurethat our products are successful and can be supported in the long-term
  • Skills& Abilities:

    Technical Skills in the followingcategories are necessary:

  • Experienceprogramming in C and C++ on "bare metal" for embedded systems.
  • Afundamental understanding of networking principles and the OSI model
  • Afundamental understanding of computer hardware, specifically related toembedded systems, e.g. power supplies, micro-processors, RAM, ROM, etc.
  • Someunderstanding of common peripheral interfaces including I2C, UART, SPI, GPIO.
  • Anunderstanding and interest in firmware design concepts and tools including HAL(Hardware Abstraction Layer), RTOS (Real Time Operating System), etc.
  • Anunderstanding of data structures and algorithms, along with concepts such asbig-O algorithmic time and storage complexity
  • Working knowledge or familiarity with thefollowing will be an asset:

  • Anunderstanding of common IoT networking protocols and standards includingZigbee, LoRA, BLE and Wi-Fi.
  • Experienceusing modern software development tools such as Visual Studio Code or Intellij.
  • Experienceworking with higher-level programming languages like Python, C#, Java, orJavascript.
  • Experiencewith C compilers and build-tools including CMake.
  • Experienceworking in the Linux operating system.
  • Experiencewith electronic circuits, PCB design, and associated CAD tools.
  • Dataanalytics and programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, C++, Python).
  • Qualifications:

  • 4th year or 3rd year students in Computer Engineering,Electrical Engineering programs, or related discipline.
  • Remuneration : $17.48- $21.69 per hour, plus 12% in lieu of statutory holidays and vacation pay (Classification: StudentResearch Assistant)

    Thisposition is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE)Collective Agreement.
