    The City of Edmonton's Traffic Operations section presents an exceptional chance to join a team within the City Operations Department critical to making our traffic system run safely and efficiently. As a Senior Traffic Engineer, you'll lead engineers and technicians tasked with signals designs, adjusting traffic signals, coordinating capital projects, and maintaining the traffic control network in Edmonton. Your effectiveness will be gauged by your adept management of yearly programs and projects, all while fostering a culture of respect, inclusivity, and service among your team.

    Aligned with the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments (Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent), you will:

    • Develop, supervise and mentor a team of professional traffic signal engineers and engineering technologists and technicians
    • Develop business area and engineering processes, guidelines, design criteria, acceptance testing, and specifications for active traffic control devices, traffic management and communication systems and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
    • Balance modal priority within the road network for the safe and efficient movement of transit, people, bicycles and vehicles
    • Oversee the effective management and delivery of annual capital programs and special projects, including the establishment of scope of work and procurement documentation for contractors or professional consulting services
    • Review both internal engineering designs and external stakeholders and consultants work
    • Direct, assign and manage work of contractors and consultants for traffic signal and ITS construction and maintenance projects
    • Contribute to the design, review and approve railway interconnection requirements and the associated modifications to traffic control systems
    • Develop strategies, survey and collect data, and model traffic flows within the city to provide safe and financially accountable solutions to traffic congestion issues
    • Assess road closures and detours to identify impacts on traffic flow and surrounding network roadways; review/prepare signal timing to accommodate and mitigate impacts
    • Address citizen and Councillor inquiries regarding traffic engineering and operation
    • Perform other related duties as required
    Qualifications

    Qualifications :

    • Completed Engineering Degree (Civil Engineering is preferred), with coursework in road safety engineering, transportation engineering/planning and project management
    • Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
    • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in transportation/traffic engineering, traffic operations and management of technical projects
    • Expertise in traffic signals engineering, geometric design, traffic operations, traffic control, associated communication systems and railway interconnections
    • Thorough understanding of Transportation Association of Canada Geometric Design and Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (Canada) engineering guidelines
    • Strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills
    • Experience managing staff and external contractors
    • Demonstrate leadership and team building skills
    • Ability to analyze complex technical information and make timely decisions and/or recommendations
    • Additional certification or coursework/training in financial management, public administration, change management or other leadership training
    • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation for this position and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require you to obtain business-use auto insurance
