    Administration Full-time Replacement Position

    The primary role of the Student Rights & Responsibilities Specialist is to facilitate the resolution of issues related to student behaviour, complaints, conflict management, and Human Rights in accordance with College policies and procedures. The incumbent also engages in education and prevention activities in an effort to promote student development and reduce complaints and policy violations.

    Often addressing visible and sensitive matters, the Specialist will work to balance the safety of the community with the goal of student development and learning. A critical component of the Specialist's role is to mitigate, manage, and prevent significant risks to the College. This work requires the incumbent to work closely with many individuals and teams across the College, such as Safety & Security, the CARE team, Human Resources, Residence, CSI, International Education, Academic Integrity Office, Faculty, and academic leadership. The Specialist is also a champion of equity, diversity, and inclusion, has strong intercultural competency, and will provide sensitive and professional support and referral to a diverse student population.

    Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with 2 days on-site, and 3 days remote.

    Responsibilities:

    Policy Processes

  • Supports the early intervention and resolution of student behavioural issues, student complaints, interpersonal disputes, academic appeals, academic dishonesty issues, Human Rights issues, and student residence issues
  • Provides a range of dispute resolution services assessment, negotiation, consultation, facilitation, mediation, conciliation, conflict coaching, and critical incident debriefing to resolve student issues and conflict
  • Investigates and documents all student issues, appeals, and incident reports and ensures all responsibilities are met during the investigation period and judiciary process
  • Consults with appropriate staff and students involved in student incidents, complaints, or appeals to provide advice regarding policy application, process, documentation, and classroom management
  • Provides insight into the recommendations that may be provided to the Dean of Students concerning suspension, expulsion, involuntary withdrawal, unique disciplinary sanctions, or restorative measures
  • Identifies the need for further assessment of mental health and behavioral-related variables and needs in order to minimize risk and support the effective management of student issues
  • Conducts sensitive interviews with stakeholders who may be involved in disputes
  • Provides guidance, answers questions, and explains the Student Rights & Responsibilities policies, procedures, and best practices to Conestoga students and staff
  • Responds to disclosures, advises students with options, and assists with referrals
  • Identifies and applies informal and formal resolution techniques that support personal and community development, accountability, and a vision of social justice
  • Promotes fairness, equity, accountability, and transparency by using an equity, anti-oppression, and anti-racism lens to the overall student experience
  • Supports students through the College's human rights and discrimination process which includes reviewing claims and their validity, seeking informal resolution and escalation
  • Refers students and staff to the most appropriate service or area on campus to resolve student concerns if outside the scope of Student Rights & Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with other College areas and committees, works to identify and respond to students who may potentially be at risk
  • Responds and attempts to seek resolution by coordinating an approach across the College for inclusion-related student concerns
  • Education & Prevention Activities

  • Ensures the College community is knowledgeable and trained in matters of Student Rights & Responsibilities through development from workshops, presentations, and participating in committees and special events
  • Provides support, partnership, and resources to satellite campuses/Campus Managers in regard to student rights and responsibilities activities
  • Maintains knowledge of policies and procedures related to student conduct and student concerns
  • General Administration

  • Develops student letters/templates, and assists with monitoring student behaviour contracts or contracts with date specific sanction completion
  • Maintains confidential files related to student issues with the highest standards of legal and professional record keeping and Dean of Students data requirements
  • Respond to inquiries via email and telephone correspondence, and in-person visits
  • Communicates critical issues and policy changes (both internal and external), and prepares briefings for management
  • Gathers, reviews, and analyzes metrics using all available data on incidents and educational supports and develops additional data-gathering mechanisms
  • Updates and maintains the Student Rights & Responsibilities reporting database
  • Leads and participates in Student Affairs or College projects or events as necessary
  • Participate on committees and working groups (internally or externally) or present at local or national training workshops or conferences as assigned
  • Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Social Work, Sociology, Community Development, or a related field is required
  • Three years of related practical work experience required
  • Training in conflict mediation, alternative dispute resolution, or restorative justice is required
  • Training in risk assessment, threat assessment, and/or non-violent crisis intervention is required
  • Training in Intercultural Communication, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), Anti-racism, Indigenous Knowledge, or Human Rights is also required
  • Understanding the application of student conduct policies and other relevant legislative requirements and policies (e.g. FIPPA, Ontario Human Rights Code, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and AODA, etc.)
  • Strong collaborative relationship, team-building skills, and superior interpersonal skills
  • Excellent project management, needs assessment, organizational, oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent mediation and conflict resolution skills
  • High degree of initiative and tact to resolve complex problems creatively and effectively, respond to disclosures, and manage highly sensitive information and contentious issues
