What you bring to the role:

Education
Master's degree in Education, educational counselling or discipline related to academic skills development and learning pedagogy.


Experience and Skills

  • Sophisticated understanding of postsecondary /higher education and today's diverse student population and best practices in student learning services and supports.
  • Thorough understanding of the challenges related to learning, academic, literacy and numeracy skill development likely to be experienced by postsecondary students of diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities that have a direct bearing on their academic functioning.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in the development, implementation and assessment of programs and services.
  • Computer and Internet literate, with the ability to lead the implementation of new technological modalities including webbased service delivery tools and client record management solutions.
  • An indepth understanding of equity principles and experience working in diverse populations.
  • Act independently and with little supervision.
  • Familiarity with the ethical standards and leading practices set by the Learning Specialist Association of Canada (LSAC), the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA), the International Centre for Supplemental Instruction, and HEQCO (Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario).
  • Familiarity with professional literature and research relating to human cognition, metacognition, learning enhancement strategies, and teaching pedagogy.
  • Working knowledge and experience with key legislation such as AODA, Ontario Human Rights code, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • The incumbent will ideally have 5 years of managerial experience in Student Learning. Experience working in a unionized environment and in building effective partnerships and collaborative initiatives with a broad range of stakeholders including Deans, Associate Deans & faculty. Understanding of the interface between learning skills and personal difficulties as well as learning skills and diagnosable learning disabilities is an asset.
  • Proven ability to supervise and manage the work of others including addressing performance issues.
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to synthesize complex issues with competing priorities.
  • Superior organizational and time management skills as well as demonstrated effectiveness in project planning and implementation.
  • Excellent Oral and Written Communications skills, including public speaking and presentation.
  • Skills in the development, deployment and utilization of evaluation and assessment measures.
