Description

The Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) is a self-regulating, not-for-profit organization that is governed by the _Architects Act_, a statute of the Government of Ontario.

Its principal object is to regulate the practice of architecture.


Purpose


Reporting to Communications Manager, the Specialist, Public Outreach is responsible for managing and supporting the attainment of the public education and outreach priorities under the OAA's Strategic Plan.

The Specialist is responsible for advancing the public's understanding and recognition that architecture is integral to the quality of life and well-being of our society as experienced through a sustainable, resilient, and durable built environment.

The Specialist will be responsible for helping deliver the OAA's Public Outreach Plan and supporting content relevant to the general public, as well as students, allied industry organizations, and the OAA's Local Architectural Societies.


Responsibilities

  • Support of the OAA Strategic Plan goals and objectives
  • Implement the OAA's Public Outreach Plan to educate the public about the role of architecture in creating the built environment and its impact on society
  • Continue education initiatives to foster a greater understanding of the OAA as a unique professional selfregulator
  • Leverage and support programs and services offered by other stakeholders in the built environment to further the public appreciation of architecture and the allied arts
  • Expand education opportunities regarding best practices in project delivery that relate to regulatory responsibilities of OAA members and practices, inclusive of procurement, in order that the public interest may continue to be served and protected
  • Advance member understanding of the role of the OAA as a regulator and of the extent to which it can promote the public appreciation of architecture
  • Increase interest from the general public to invite OAA to engage/inform on built environment issues
  • Education and Events for the General Public
  • Manages the implementation and delivery of OAA communication and education programs and events that are public facing
  • Coordinates and supports individual public outreach initiatives that are delivered through individual service areas or by specific staff members
  • Supports and coordinates the implementation of a defined program of public education that responds to the OAA mandate
  • Committee support
  • Provides the necessary staff support to the OAA's Communications & Public Education Committee, including meeting administration and managing programs and processes within the group's mandate
  • Facilitates the attainment of the roles and responsibilities of the Committee as prescribed in the approved Terms of Reference
  • Stakeholder and Allied Industry Outreach
  • Develops and coordinates the materials and information necessary to support the components of the OAA's Public Outreach Plan focused on allied industry organizations and other outside stakeholders
  • Works with other OAA staff in coordination with the Local Architecture Societies specifically related to their public outreach initiatives

Qualifications

  • Experience organizing events and managing projects
  • Experience in public relations and digital communications management
  • Experience drafting and editing public facing documents
  • Experience in stakeholder relations
  • Experience with committees or equivalent groups
  • Selfstarter who works well in a collaborative team environment
  • Strong communication skills, including facilitation and presentation skills
  • Postsecondary education in a related field

Compensation
- $70,000 - $80,000 per year commensurate with experience
