Position Summary

This position, reporting to the Dean of the School of Community and Health Studies, is accountable for providing academic and administrative leadership, supervision and direction to faculty, managers, support staff and students in the School in a collaborative and compassionate manner.

The Chair also provides leadership in the development and delivery of a related cluster of courses and programs (certificate, diploma, advanced diploma and bachelor's degree) in both full-time and part-time delivery formats offered by the Community Services department of the School.

The full-time program cluster includes programs such as: Social Service Worker, Addictions and Mental Health Worker, Community and Justice Services, Community Services Foundation, Developmental Service Worker, and Community Development).

The Chair is responsible for the integration of the principles and practices of a Learning Centred College and accountable for the integration of the principles of Indigenization, decolonization, and equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of the department.

The Chair is also responsible for the development of new courses, programs, and special initiatives as identified in the College's Strategic and Business Plans, School's business plan and/or sector/environmental research including part-time learning.


Responsibilities

  • Participates in the development of the school's yearly business plan, priorities and objectives which support the College's Strategic and Business Plans.
  • Maintaining a high level of performance through effective recruiting, selection, development, motivation, evaluation and training of faculty, and support staff.
  • Promoting, supporting and monitoring the ongoing professional development, scholarship and research activity of faculty and staff.
  • Directing and administering the activities of the faculty in their teaching assignments and creating an effective working environment for the staff and the teaching/learning process; ensuring that faculty and staff assignments are consistent with college policies and procedures, collective agreements in place and other agreements relating to partnerships.
  • Negotiates and assigns full time faculty workload each semester while adhering to the Standard Work Formula (SWF).
  • Launches new program opportunities for parttime learners in collaboration with industry partners and Program Advisory Committees. Establishes learning outcomes for programs according to provisions set out in College and Ministry policies. Promotes the integration of technology into both curriculum and pedagogical practices by inspiring and supporting faculty to examine and experiment with new educational technology.
  • Conducting first level investigations and initiating problemsolving processes for disputes involving faculty, staff and students within the department, respecting collective agreements, student rights documents etc. to assist in the dispute resolution process.
  • Developing and managing the operating budgets for the programs and departments in collaboration with the School's administrative team.
  • Identifying new program opportunities, directing and participating in the College's program and curriculum reviews, coordinator development process and external program approval and/or accreditation processes for programs in this portfolio.
  • Accountable for the planning and enrolment of courses/parttime programs by semester. Plans course offerings with the Scheduling Department, Schools and Department Chairs, Operation Mangers, and the Corporate Planning Office for implementation throughout the academic year.
