THE OPPORTUNITY
Western Forest Products is hiring for a
Log Transportation Supervisor based in Nanaimo, BC.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to work as part of WFP's Log Allocation & Distribution team, serving as the critical link between our Timberlands and Manufacturing operations.


What You'll Do:

As Log Transportation Supervisor, you will work with our operations and contractors to ensure on-time, on-forecast delivery of logs to internal WFP sawmills and points of sale.

Your primary responsibilities include the organization of all barge operations, oversight of a contract dryland sort and assisting in the management of our barge sorting facility and towing activities.


Work Environment:

This position is based out of our Nanaimo office and will be a balance of work from office, our Vancouver Island Operations (primarily in the Ladysmith area) and work from home based on the needs of the position.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Dispatch all log barging that is within the responsibility of the Log Allocation & Distribution group;
  • Work with Timberlands operations to ensure ontime and onforecast delivery of logs to barge tie ups to facilitate barge operations;
  • Oversee contract operations at the Fibre Supply dryland sort;
  • Coordinate and assist with operations at the Fibre Supply barge sorting facility;
  • Coordinate and assist with towing activity between WFP camps and facilities;
  • Provide quality control leadership of Western's booming practices, boom gear and sticks;
  • Evaluate, recommend and implement lowest cost options for log delivery, log sorting, boomstick processing and boom gear purchase/delivery.
  • Demonstrate safety leadership within Western's marine logistics supply chain by creating a safetyoriented community with the external suppliers that support Western's supply chain; age environmental requirements of all Fibre Supply log handling tenures;
  • Ensure suppliers are working consistent with any applicable contracts or terms;
  • Identify system improvements that will facilitate inventory transparency throughout the supply chain and operational processes;
  • Manage age of inventory in storage consistent with SOPs to avoid log degradation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • 5 years of experience in the forest industry; and,
  • Supervisory experience considered a strong asset.
  • Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies
  • Strong collaboration skills and excellent communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision;
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite;
  • Direct experience with log distribution including log towing, barging and booming a strong asset;
  • Direct experience with log booming practices and dryland sort processes a strong asset;
  • Knowledge of coastal harvesting & log handling practices a strong asset;
  • Experience with log sorting practices and quality control a strong asset;
  • Knowledge of lumber manufacturing and markets a strong asset;
  • Understanding of lean operations management;
  • Familiarity with LIMS; and,
  • Personal drive and commitment to Western's values.
