Position Summary:
Pan-American Data Initiative for the Analysis of Population Racial/Ethnic Health Inequities

We are hiring a part-time Graduate Student Research Assistant (approx. 12 hours/week.)

The successful applicant, working under the supervision of Dr. Mabel Carabali will work as a research assistant for the coordination of the CIHR funded Pan-Diaspora Project
_Pan-American Data Initiative for the Analysis of Population Racial/Ethnic Health Inequities_).

The Pan-Diaspora project is a collaborative research initiative designed to examine the availability, quality and scope of data collected and used on racial/ethnic inequities in urban areas in the Pan-American region, including Brazil, Colombia, Canada, and the United States.

Using available national census data, health surveys and health surveillance systems and vital statistics registries, and situated within intersectional frameworks, the Pan-Diaspora project will contribute to the understanding the use of these data sources for the accurate documentation of racial health inequities, the creation of measures designed to describe the conditions in racial/ethnic groups are embedded, and the development of policy action to mitigate and eliminate racial health inequities in the region.

This project is a partnership between McGill University (Canada), the Ubuntu Center on Racism, Global Movements, and Population Health Equity at Drexel University (US), the Institute of Collective Health at the Federal University of Bahia (Brazil), the University of Toronto (Canada), the School of Government at Universidad de los Andes (Colombia), Johns Hopkins University (US), Pedro Kouri Institute (Cuba), and the SALURBAL Project at the Urban Health Collaborative at Drexel University (US).

The post holder will work closely with our collaborators, for which it is important to have knowledge of the Latin American context and or be able to communicate in either Spanish and or Portuguese.


Responsibilities will involve:

  • Assists in the planning/organization of research projects
  • Supports research activities directly related to the research project such as literature reviews, grant preparation, scientific reports, and preparation of ethics review board documents and contracts
  • Assists in data management efforts (e.g., maintain accurate and complete record of activities, data collection, and data analysis procedures) in research studies
  • To participate on data analysis (depending on the experience) and contribute to the interpretation and presentation of research findings via publications in peerreviewed journals and at conferences
  • Monitor study progress to ensure completeness and accuracy of data collected
  • Assist in knowledge transfer activities (e.g., elaboration of policy briefs)
  • To attend relevant workshops and conferences, and travel as necessary
  • To learn new skills and contribute to other projects

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Knowledge of Latin American and Caribbean context and culture,
  • Experience with project management,
  • Experience with R or Stata,
  • Proficient in English (written and oral),
  • Knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to provide guidance and to work alongside other research assistants and established academic leaders.
  • Excellent timemanagement skills and attention to detail.
  • Works well independently as well as with a team.

Salary:
$35 per hour
