Job Summary:

Reporting to the Manager, Public Consultation Unit, the Coordinator, Public Consultation will be responsible for implementing public consultation programs for City of Toronto clients including Toronto Water, Transportation Services, Solid Waste Management Services, and Engineering & Construction Services.


Major Responsibilities:


  • Initiates, plans and organizes open houses, workshops and other activities for the public on technical aspects of projects.
  • Works with staff on public consultation strategies and alerts senior staff about the public's concerns.
  • Initiates, plans, organizes and facilitates meetings that can include the public, senior staff, consultants and Toronto Councillors. Responds to telephone inquiries and correspondence from the public.
  • Prepares materials and reports regarding public consultation aspects of projects.
  • Prepares, reviews, analyzes and maintains documents related to, responses to Toronto outreach initiatives, provincially mandated requirements under the Environmental Assessment Act, minutes and records of public meetings and workshops.
  • Initiates, plans, and organizes planning meetings concerning the public consultation components of ongoing projects with senior operations and planning staff from other divisions.
  • Interacts with divisional staff, other City divisions as well as Toronto Councillors on issues related to divisional projects.
  • Liaises with staff from related provincial and federal departments.

Key Qualifications:


  • Post-Secondary education in a discipline pertinent to the job function (i.e. social science, political science, environment or planning, sociology, urban studies, environmental studies, geography, or planning) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable experience using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Outlook) and InDesign or Adobe Illustrator.
  • Experience conducting public consultation projects and activities.

You must also have:


  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of public consultation and consensus building techniques and practices.
  • Excellent understanding, knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of knowledge, temperament, languages, literacy levels, culture and ethnoracial background in communities throughout Toronto.
  • Knowledge of the local geography, political structure and physical structure of Toronto communities.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to interpret technical information into a written form that is understandable by the general public.
  • Knowledge of social media tools and trends and ability to use social media for public consultation and information purposes.
  • Good public speaking skills including the ability to speak with knowledge and assurance in front of an audience.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to load/unload and set up materials and equipment for public events using a corporate vehicle.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required.
  • Ability to support the Toronto Public Service values to ensure a culture that champions equity, diversity, and respectful workplaces.
