Shipping/Logistic Supervisor in our
Cambridge, ON Branch.


Purpose

  • The purpose of this position is to ensure that the Russel Metals Cambridge Fleet operates within all the Ontario Regulations and the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Ensure that the company CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operators Registration) is always in good standing.
  • Ensure that all Russel Metals Drivers operate within the Ontario Regulations and the Highway Traffic Act, including the Russel Metals Ontario Region Fleet Management & Driver Manual Standard Operating Procedures
  • Ensure the highest level of customer service possible, from the Cambridge Transportation department, which involves the shipping department and drivers.

  • Develop and maintain models for the use in evaluating logistics programs or services for the most efficient use of our delivery trucks to reduce the use of outside carriers.
  • Establish and implement policies and standards for the safe and organized transportation of steel products to our customers.
  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate daily operations, oversee the scheduling and shipping of goods and dispatching of vehicles.
  • Monitor department's performance, prepare reports for management and plan changes to schedules and policies.
  • Negotiate for services and preferential carrier rates.
  • Attend meetings to agree upon production timelines and transportation expectations.
  • Build strong relationships with preferred suppliers, contractors and carriers, to ensure services and goods are being delivered on time and in the most economical manner.
  • Using positive coaching and communication skills to manage the performance of the Cambridge team and all key stakeholders to align with regional objectives.

Job Requirements

  • Monitor daily shipping activities and processes conducted by shipping team and drivers, to ensure the highest level of customer service is attained and that all department targets are met.
  • Monitor workloads and adjust shift structures within the shipping department to best suit the company business needs.
  • Approves, schedules and tracks shipping department and drivers vacation request, communicates information with payroll department.
  • Monitors department's attendance, both shipping personnel and drivers, conducts coach and council and issues discipline.
  • Develops, records and monitors department KPI's, to ensure the fleet and drivers are operating efficiently and within company expectations and policies.
  • Require outsourcing best pricing and oversee purchasing of items such as fuel, hardwood, truck wash, truck, trailer, and load securement supplies.
  • Is responsible for the safe operation of the Russel Metals Cambridge fleet, trucks, and trailers and is required to dispatch and coordinate repair service to equipment on the road including tire service and dispatch heavy towing equipment to disable units.
  • Required to coordinate regular Preventive Maintenance and Annual Safeties for trucks and trailers, with the appropriate vendors, enter all repairs and maintenance in the eMaint records file.
  • Is required to keep the transportation and driver's files in order, as per company policy and MTO requirements.
  • Required to ensure, that all safety training requirements for drivers, including (LMS) courses are completed by all drivers as scheduled.
  • Communicate & work closely with plant and planning department.
  • Required to monitor, GPS system and electronic logs, track and adjust data as necessary, coach train and implement rules and changes if required, to ensure drivers and fleet are operating within all MTO regulations.
  • Required to monitor SmartDrive review incidents, ensure drivers are being coached as required, dispute incidents with monitoring station when required, discipline drivers as needed.
  • Support and follow corporate directives, goals, and objectives.
  • Follow all Health & Safety, Quality and Company policies and procedures.

Education and Skills Required

  • Minimum 5year shipping experience in service center environment preferred (Steel)
  • Effective communication skills and problemsolving abilities
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Management experience required
  • Ability to manage team of 2025 employees
  • Knowledge of Metalware and RMI Trucking software would be an asset.
