VANCOUVER LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT AND REFERRAL CENTRE
Conduct English Language proficiency assessment interviews (listening and speaking tests) and invigilate/score reading and writing tests in accordance with established criteria and protocols using the
Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT)

  • Conduct remote CLBPT and/or other English assessments on a online platform
  • Consult with other assessors and the supervisor of assessment services regarding scoring and placement decisions as required
  • Determine class level placements according to established placement guidelines for Canadian Language Benchmarks profiles
  • Enter assessment results into database and generate assessment reports and results letters to be mailed to clients
  • Maintain a daily manual count of assessments conducted and placement levels
  • Maintain a supply of test forms and assessment report forms
  • Advise supervisor of need for reprinting/resupply of forms
  • Between assessments, during noshows and in case of other staff illness or vacation, perform duties of client services support and/or referral counsellor as required and as time permits
  • Participate in assessor training and calibration sessions
  • Assist in the training of new assessors
  • Assist and substitute as required
  • Determine and confirm immigration status and program eligibility of applicants
  • Perform administrative duties such as word processing, data entry, scheduling appointments, sending appointment letters, faxing, photocopying, filing, answering telephones and maintaining documentation
  • Any other duties as required

Mandatory Requirements:


  • Postsecondary degree in an appropriate discipline such as ESL, Arts, Education, Languages and Psychology
  • TESL Training Certificate with supervised practicum
  • 300 hours teaching adult ESL or working in the immigrant services field
  • Familiar with Canadian Language Benchmarks
  • Thorough understanding of communicative competence and taskbased approaches
  • Experience in interview techniques and exceptional communication skills
  • Accent free
    nativespeaker fluency in English, both spoken and written (must be at least a Canadian Language benchmark 11 in all subs skills in order to assess up to CLB 10)
  • Able to evaluate language samples from literacy to upper advanced levels
  • Solid grasp of comparative complexity of levels of English language structure and vocabulary
  • Ability to use levelappropriate speech for clients with varying language proficiencies
  • Superior decision making conversation management, effective listening and speech elicitation skills
  • Extreme tact and patience when dealing with ESL clients and empathy for Second Language learners
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff members, LINC suppliers, ministry personnel and the general public
  • Training/certification in administration of the Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test CLBPT
  • Knowledge of LINC program policies and operational procedures
  • Working knowledge of an additional language relevant to our clientele
  • Experience and/or training in a counseling situation

Salary:
From $28.00 per hour

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Vancouver, BC: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

  • Do you have a recognized University degree in English, linguistics/languages or similar field, TESL training recognized by TESL Canada or Provincial teaching credentials and taught at least 300 hours of ESL to adults (within the last 2 years in Canada) and knowledge of CLB demonstrated through use of and/or participation in CLB workshops.
