Role Responsibilities:


Reporting to the Director of Bridge Engineering, you will take the lead role in: developing, implementing and maintaining a bridge asset management program; the development of standards and providing expert engineering advice for bridge rehabilitations; and the development of guidelines for bridge service life design criteria throughout the life cycle of a bridge, including assessment criteria for evaluating bridge replacement and rehabilitation alternatives.

You will also be involved with the evaluation of deteriorated bridges and supporting the development of guidelines for managing deteriorated bridges.

You will also support the Transportation Infrastructure Management System (TIMS) update activities, and the implementation of a new bridge asset management system.


You will work closely with the bridge preservation specialist, other members of the Bridge Engineering section, as well as the Regional Bridge Managers.


Your responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Developing and implementing models for prioritizing bridge rehabilitations and replacements, including benefit cost models and risk-based models.
  • Utilizing outputs from the Level 1, 1.5, and 2 bridge inspection programs to support the development of bridge rehabilitation and replacement programs.
  • Utilizing the outputs from the bridge state of the asset report to assess the success of the prioritization models and develop improvements to attain ministry objectives.
  • Providing expert engineering advice for bridge rehabilitation projects during design and construction.
  • Developing and maintaining standards/guidelines for bridge assessment and rehabilitation.
  • Developing and maintaining standards/guidelines for implementing bridge service life design concepts throughout the entire bridge life cycle.
  • Working with other bridge engineering specialists to thoroughly implement service life design criteria into the planning, new design and construction of bridges.
  • Working collaboratively with bridge engineering staff and Regional staff to evaluate the current bridge management tools, identify gaps in the current system, identify new tools/techniques, and support the implementation of improvements.
  • Working with others to identify and evaluate possible new bridge asset management systems.
  • Providing mentoring to staff through technical advice and guidance.
