The Opportunity:


This position works under the general direction of the Lieutenant, Captain, and Platoon Chief who are in charge of his/her assigned shift.

He/she shall carry out all duties and tasks as assigned by the Officer In Charge (OIC), which reflect and are consistent with overall Departmental policy.


Accountabilities:


  • Co-operates with fellow fire fighters in programs implemented by management to meet the needs of an expanding fire service with emphasis on operations and prevention.
  • Carries out all duties and assigned tasks efficiently and promptly.
  • Maintains and cares for all personal fire rescue equipment assigned to him/her.
  • Maintains and cares for all equipment assigned to stations and apparatus.
  • Maintains a good knowledge of the City of St. John's Act, St. John's Fire Department By-Law (1362), Rules and Regulations, Policies and Operational Guidelines of the Department, the current Collective Agreement, the Safe Work Practice Manual, and any other applicable policies, procedures or legislation.
  • Possesses a good knowledge of the streets, hydrants and target hazards in their first and second due response areas by individual study and active participation in yearly exams.
  • Maintains a current knowledge of all fire fighting skills by individual study and active participation in yearly exams. Participates in all drills and assigned training courses and is self motivated to highly educate himself/herself in an effort to be prepared to advance in rank and meet high standards demanded of modern age fire departments.
  • Performs all tasks related to fire suppression and other emergencies, using tools and equipment as directed by the IC and performs all duties that may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications:


  • Successful completion of high school or equivalent;
  • NFPA Firefighter Level II Certification and IFSAC Seal or ProBoard Number;
  • Valid Criminal Record Screening Certificate with vulnerable sector check (must be issued within the last 6 months);
  • Class 03 Newfoundland and Labrador Driver's License with 09 Air Brake Endorsement or, outofprovince equivalents for nonresidents.**

Physical Requirements:

This position is classified as safety sensitive. The City of St.

John's has a comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Policy to ensure fitness for work and the completion of a satisfactory alcohol and drug test is a mandatory pre-employment requirement.


Hours of Work:

Hours of work will be on an as-needed basis as determined by SJRFD. Full time positions will be offered in accordance with placement on the Temporary Firefighters list as vacancies occur.


Applicants must be members of the International Association of Firefighters, Local 1075, or should be prepared to join the Union immediately upon appointment.
