Work Arrangements:

We are currently working remotely, and we will be moving to a hybrid model when our office renovation is complete (approximately September 2023), coming into the office a minimum of 2 days per week, every other week on designated days.


The Opportunity:

Equitable Life is looking for a Chief Underwriter & Claims Vice President to join the Individual Leadership Team (ILT) This role will lead the Individual Life & Health underwriting & claims function.

Additionally, this role is responsible for ensuring that appropriate underwriting philosophies, standards, methodologies, and controls are developed and in place to balance the Company's growth and risk experience objectives.

The Chief Underwriter & Claims contributes to the development of the business strategy and ensures that strategy is effectively translated to support and provide guidance for our underwriting and claims.

Through proactive leadership, this role ensures the Department's operational procedures are developed and carried out with a focus on the client and advisor every step of the way

What you will be doing:


  • Responsible for the development, implementation and enforcement of underwriting guidelines, practices and procedures that balance risk assessment with business growth, and are compliant with Company, reinsurer and regulatory standards
  • Monitor and assess competitive trends in underwriting guidelines, practices and technology and evolve Equitable Life's practices as appropriate.
  • Manage the underwriting relationships with reinsurance partners and negotiate guidelines
  • Evaluate, select and manage vendors that provide evidence requirements for our files, including negotiating of price and other contract terms
  • Oversee the development, implementation and enforcement of individual claims guidelines, practices and procedures that balance risk and client, beneficiary, stakeholder, and advisor experiences
  • Accountable for claims guidelines and authority through regular review, audits and key metrics
  • Ensure regional sales managers, MGAs and advisors are trained in Equitable Life underwriting guidelines and processes; participate in regional marketing presentations and training meetings and develop other senior staff to do likewise
  • Ensure responsible human resource management including recruiting, performance management, reward and recognition and talent management; ensure that underwriters and claims case managers have technical training and development plans in place
  • Develop and maintain key relationships with principles across partner firms; Advisors, MGA & National Accounts
  • Work closely collaborating & coordinating with Product, Marketing, Pricing, Distribution, Operations, Finance, Technology to achieve overall key metrics and strategic objectives for division
  • Partner closely with other lines of business
  • S&R and GB to align practices, experiences on both claims and underwriting as appropriate.
  • Represent Equitable Life at various industry opportunities ensuring close relationships with competitor peers, LIMRA CLHIA etc.
  • Represent Equitable Life externally at conferences, speaking engagements, through marketing solutions, social media etc.

  • Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) designation
  • 15+ years' progressive senior leadership experience in underwriting within a dynamic, fastpaced life insurance organization with welldeveloped industry relationships
  • Extensive experience in all aspects of risk selection medical, nonmedical and financial; large case negotiations experience preferred
  • Developed and mentored high performing teams to operate with a sense of urgency and accountability, empowering the team and fostering a collegial spiri
