Nature & Scope**:

YMCA BC is seeking a Health & Safety (H&S) Manager who, while reporting to the Chief People Officer (CPO), will work closely with the HR team and various facilities to maintain, implement, and consistently improve Healthy and Safety Policies & Practices within our programs.

In order to service the programs, build relationships and understand the needs of our various portfolios, including facilities, customer service, childcare, camps, & health, fitness and aquatics portfolios, the H&S Manager will be required to travel to various YMCA BC sites for training, auditing and investigative purposes.


Major Responsibilities:


  • Work closely with Health and Safety Director to coach various staff and managers on health and safety protocol, especially in relation to their applicable portfolios. Ensure that volunteers also receive proper orientations.
  • Review, edit/develop and implement health & safety training within union and nonunion environments.
  • Stay current on legislation and guidance from Public Health, Technical Safety, Provincial Work Safe and Child Guidance associations (and other associations as required).
  • Recommend, review, maintain and update policies for Occupational Health & Safety which include but are not limited to: disaster planning, crisis prevention, physical and verbal violence intervention, risk management, ergonomic supports and overall upkeep with required legislation.
  • Responds to YMCA BC incident reports, supporting management by appropriately and effectively following up with support, investigation and recommendations.
  • Perform informal and formal audits as per H&S Director to build relationships and trust among YMCA BC team and make recommendations on potential improvements that are required to ensure Health & Safety practices are current.
  • Work with compliance team to assess and measure that Health & Safety strategies are effective and relevant to serving YMCA BC needs.
  • Build trust with regards to Health & Safety knowledge and ethics.

Skills & Qualifications:


  • 5+ years of experience working in a Health & Safety department requiring a "can do" attitude, willingness to bring more than one solution to the table and commitment to creativity in decision making.
  • Ability to work well with a variety of personalities and levels of staff/management.
  • Occupational Health and Safety certificate or diploma, preferred
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation an asset
  • Experienced trainer in crisis prevention and verbal deescalation skills, preferred
  • Experience in training of crisis prevention and verbal deescalation strategies preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of Works Safe Legislation.
  • Prior experience working in a notforprofit environment.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and Teams is an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Posses a valid B.C. Drivers License and the ability to readily travel to various YMCA BC facilities as required.
