Assessment accommodation

To be considered for the Research Affiliate Program (RAP), you must meet the following criteria:

Duties:


Under the supervision of government research scientists and academic collaborators, the selected student will be responsible for designing and conducting research to assess spatial and temporal patterns in the population genetics of a set of target species, and identify links between those patterns and climate change.

This work will leverage the wealth of data available in the Canadian National Collection of Insects, Arachnids, and Nematodes.


Work environment:


The Landscape Science and Technology Division of Environment and Climate Change Canada is located at the National Wildlife Research Centre on the campus of Carleton University in Ottawa, which allows for close collaboration between government researchers and the students and faculty of Carleton University.

This student research assistant position will provide the opportunity to collaborate with researchers at Environment and Climate Change Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and other government agencies, as well as with faculty and students at Carleton University.

The selected student would have access to a range of required work locations and resources, such as the newly established molecular biology lab at Carleton University, computation clusters, and data in the Canadian National Collection of Insects, Arachnids, and Nematodes.

Education:


The Student must be currently enrolled or in the process of enrolling in a Master's Program with full-time student status in the Faculty of Biology at Carleton University, a recognized postsecondary academic institution.

The student must have completed at least one university course in genetics, at either the undergraduate or graduate level.

Degree equivalency


Experience:


  • Experience with laboratory molecular work (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, barcoding, gel electrophoresis etc.)
  • Experience working with fresh or preserved insect specimens (mounting, databasing).
