THE OPPORTUNITY


The Maintenance Worker in Parks and Open Spaces performs semi-skilled manual work and operates vehicles and limited equipment in accomplishing all operations and maintenance tasks assigned in delivering the prescribed programs and services in the Parks Division of the City.

An incumbent receives oral and written instructions from a supervisor who evaluates the work performed.

Employees in this position may occasionally be responsible for the task coordination of employees assigned as helpers (team leader) and are to promote a positive, secure and safe work environment.

This position reports to the Manager and Field Foreman of Parks and Open Spaces.
This is a full-time, permanent position.

Probationary Rate:
$29.93 per hour


Base Rate:
$30.55


Developmental Rate:
$31.31


Qualified Rate:
$32.06


RESPONSIBILITIES
Park and Open Space Maintenance

  • Perform all assigned tasks in the operation and maintenance of turfgrass, horticulture, trails, sports fields, playgrounds, outdoor rinks, snow and ice control, special events and associated ancillary facilities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance inspections and furnish reports.
  • Cut grass using riding mowers, push mowers, weed eaters, trimmers, edgers; cut and remove sod.
  • Load and unload materials.
  • Collect refuse in parks, boulevards, trails and sports fields.
  • Dig, till, water, fertilize, plant, weed and trim flowers, plants and trees.
  • Cut trees and brush using chain saws; haul and split firewood.
  • Install posts, railings and bollards.
  • Repair picnic tables, park benches, backstops and dugouts.
  • Shovel and rake dirt, shale, gravel, snow and other materials.
  • Sweep and hose down surfaces and sand sidewalks.
Maintaining Equipment

  • Perform daily inspection of utilized vehicles and equipment and report deficiencies.
  • Carry out daily equipment lubrication needs and minor equipment maintenance.

Team Leader Responsibilities:
The employee in this position assumes occasional responsibility to:

  • Coordinate, schedule, assign and direct labour, equipment and materials to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Direct crew work in accordance with industry accepted practices and City procedures.
  • Ensure crew work is in accordance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Review City Safe Work Practices, assess work site hazards and hold tool box meetings at the start of every task or project, prepare tool box meeting reports; prepare incident reports; ensure no worker starts work on the site that has not been through a safety briefing or tool box meeting.
  • Ensure that daily inspection/lubrication/minor maintenance of utilized vehicles and equipment is undertaken before utilization; report deficiencies.
  • Communicate instructions in clear terms; treat all employees equitably and without favour or bias.
  • Report actions that may be cause for employee discipline to supervisor.
  • Handle onsite public inquiries in a courteous manner, refer inquiries to supervisor when response not certain.
  • Organize work timelines to least interfere with public use of assets.
  • Order materials in a timely manner to ensure the continuous functioning of the crew.
  • Coordinate implementation of small construction projects that include outsourced services.
  • Ensure that established work quality/productivity/time standards are met.
  • Train staff new to the task to be fully competent in their activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED
QUALIFICATIONS:


  • High School Diploma or GED, supplemented by experience in tasks and the operation of equipment assigned to the position or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • A minimum of 1 years' experience of tasks and equipment operating related to a Parks environment.
  • Possession of a valid Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operator's License mandatory; Class 5Q is considered an asset.
  • Must have basic office computer skills.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions, including completing required forms, reports, maps and drawings.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work of this position.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries/complaints in a manner that is sensitive to the needs of the public.
