System Excellence is responsible for the areas of teaching and leadership excellence and provincial assessment.
This includes certification of all teachers, principals and superintendents in the province; developing and implementing professional practice standards; and conducting practice assurance in relation to the teaching profession.
System Excellence division also develops, administers, marks and continually improves Alberta's provincial assessments, including the Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs), Diploma Exams (DIPS), Student Learning Assessments (SLAs) and Literacy/Numeracy Assessments.

Role Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Online Assessment Specialist, the Field-Testing Coordinator will lead the digital development and delivery of online field tests and support the transition away from the optional provision of paper field tests in the province of Alberta.
- This role is critical in ensuring that high quality Provincial Achievement Test (PAT) and Diploma Exam items continue to be developed and field tested at the rigor stakeholders expect from Alberta Education. The incumbent generates and provides the data that ensures Alberta Education's assessment are credible, accurately reflect student achievement in the province, and undergo continual improvement processes prior to provincewide implementation on a standardized test.
- Over the next two years Systems Excellence will require a permanent FTE for the Field-Testing Coordinator to transition internal processes for field testing in paper and legacy digital platform formats to the digital platform:
- In , field testing in digital format will be optional and require some paper processing.
- In , paper field testing will be formally phased out, with field testing being administered online. Paper field testing will be officially considered an accommodation in the General Information Bulletin.
- In , the General Information Bulletin will indicate that paper field testing is not available in paper formats.
Role Responsibilities Continued:
The Field-Testing Coordinator must be able to liaise with technical staff, editors, art staff and team leads to address their field testing needs and support the digital transformation to a new online platform.
The incumbent must be able to work within multiple technology environments and possess the skills to troubleshoot within them, including Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, the Provincial Assessment Authoring tool, related technologies and legacy online-testing systems.
1. Ongoing Field Test Coordination
- Liaising with other areas of the sector to communication changes and identify impacts necessary for the daily operations of the fieldtesting system.
- Maintaining the provision of paper field tests for Alberta's 3,500+ students on Hutterite colonies during the transition period.
- Maintaining the provision of paper field tests for students with accommodations where possible during the transition period; and
- Maintaining direct enduser support via advice to the Online Assessment Specialist.
2. Digital Field-Testing Transformation
- Digital field test development, upgrading, UAT testing, maintenance and delivery.
- Digital field test configurations and workflows.
- Troubleshooting and identifying faults within the systems and recommend modification to resolve the problems.
- Leading the resolution of complex hardware/software issues (i.e. impact the entire sector; involves specialty equipment, etc.)
- Supporting the development of test models and plans for largescale digital implementation; and
- Reporting on participation rates and performing data analysis in the digital platform.
3. Duties as assigned
- Supporting the Online Assessment Specialist as required.
Qualifications:
University graduation in a related field; no experience required; or equivalent as described below
Equivalency:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
