What is The Serious Fraud Office?


The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) is a specialized team of investigators and prosecutors who work as a unit to investigate and prosecute instances of significant and large-scale fraud affecting the province of Ontario.

The Prosecution Branch of the SFO falls under the general supervision of Crown Law Office - Criminal and is responsible for the prosecution of criminal charges laid by the Investigation Branch of the SFO.


The Criminal Law Division is a large geographically dispersed operation with approximately 1500 staff that helps protect community and personal safety through prosecution of offences across the province.

What can I expect to do in this role?: Duties will include:

  • Conducting prosecutions in the Ontario and Superior Courts of Justice throughout Ontario
  • Assisting senior counsel with research, case preparation and courtroom advocacy in complex financial crime prosecutions in the Ontario and Superior Courts of Justice throughout Ontario
  • Conducting appeals in the Summary Conviction Appeal Court
  • Work in the area of criminal law policy
  • Work in the area of Mutual legal Assistance and Extraditions and Criminal Asset Forfeiture
  • Providing legal advice to the police, the Director of the Crown Law Office, other ministry officials and other government departments and agencies
  • Participating in educational and training sessions for prosecutors, police and other justice partners

How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:
Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario


Knowledge and Skills:


  • Thorough knowledge of criminal and constitutional law, including statute and case law regarding the prosecution of criminal and quasicriminal offences at all levels
  • Proven research skills and analytical ability to organize a principled approach to cases and issues
  • Proficiency with technological tools for litigation; e.g. QuickLaw, SCOPE, PowerPoint, electronic case management software, etc.
  • Demonstrated writing skills and trial advocacy experience
  • Experience with large case management
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of the role and function of prosecutor
  • Integrity and demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
