Your roles and responsibilities:

  • Become the internal asphalt expert
  • Increase knowledge of PMA, Emulsions, other new products, as well as enhancing knowledge of straight run grades as well.
  • Document knowledge, through development of procedure manuals.
  • Provide training and mentoring to other internal resources.
  • Research best in class lab requirements and testing methods
  • Work with customers to address quality concerns and identify and correct root causes.
  • Interact with industry experts to gain knowledge.
  • Interact with Provincial and State DOT engineers
  • Draft testing protocols that can aid in speed to market, while balancing risk of off spec product.
  • Support asphalt growth initiative by understanding asphalt specifications required by new markets and advising strategy, commercial, and operational teams as necessary.
  • Support site visits and inspections to assess functionality and condition of available asphalt assets in target markets
  • Support the evaluation of asphalt assets infrastructure design and sustainment
  • Identify efficiency improvements across the supply chain and provide recommendations to optimize the functionality and capacity of asphalt supply chain assets and infrastructure resources
  • Partner with the Asphalt Technical Lead and Asphalt Operational Specialist and other teams (Trading, Wholesale Team, Refinery, Quality, Logistics & Distribution, EHS and Terminal Groups) to develop standards and ensure product is delivered in compliance within internal / external product and industry requirements.
  • Provide specialist guidance to support the sales and trading teams with customer facing activities and responsiveness to changing customer requirements.
  • Identify, investigate, and execute on opportunities for continuous improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of the asphalt supply chain.
  • Foster strong relationships with the operational teams at Irving Oil Asphalt terminals and at 3rd Party leased asphalt terminals.
  • Support asphalt sales growth initiatives by participating in the development of project schedules and resourcing plans to effectively coordinate activities across the supply chain


Professional skills- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings sets preferred- Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment of the building and petroleum trades preferred- Understanding standards in Canada and the US as related to petroleum product handling, transportation, and storage (processes and assets) considered an asset to the role- Strong interpersonal skills- Ability to lead by influence in order to manage initiatives spanning across different functional areas of the supply chain.- Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to articulate clear directions and objectives to work teams.- Confident in taking the lead role in meetings, planning sessions, etc.

- Ability to motivate vendors to act with a sense of urgency to complete work in a timely manner
