Canada West Veterinary Specialists is an exciting multi-disciplinary specialty referral practice with a dedicated 24-hour ERCC service.

We hold a unique designation as one of the furst verified Veterinary Trauma Center in Western Canada, designated per the Veterinary Committee on Trauma (VetCOT).

We have 7 specialty departments, including Oncology, Neurology, Diagnostic Imaging, Surgery, Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology, with added services including Rehabilitation Therapy and an in-house lab.

Position:
Veterinary Technologist


Department:
Surgery


Reports to:
Technician Supervisor


This position is responsible primarily for surgical patient care including taking radiographs, preparing patients for surgery, following treatment plans, administering drugs, monitoring vital signs and over-all patient assessment.

Both client communications and hands-on patient care are conducted under the direct supervision of the surgical specialist on a specific case.


DUTIES AND Responsibilities:


  • Must develop a thorough understanding of all procedures and protocols within the surgical service as well as the ability to use all equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ensures supply inventory is sufficient to meet the needs of the surgical service.
  • Ensures that procedures are accurately documented on ICU sheets in advance of daily invoicing
  • Responsible for documenting all patient information while on shift and for ensuring that this information is transmitted to staff on Wards and in ICU
  • Ensures that all equipment is properly maintained, and that maintenance is documented.
  • Keeps the surgical areas clean and organized
  • As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital when your service is not in need of you or if the doctor on the service is away. This could involve working any shift within the twentyfourhour operating day of the hospital including weekends and holidays.
  • Performs other duties as required

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong desire to learn and excel within the profession
  • Ability to recognize and establish priorities within the surgical service
  • Has a strong knowledge and understanding of normal vital parameters, and the ability to recognize changes and or abnormalities
  • A strong knowledge of asepsis
  • Strong mathematics skills (drug dose calculations, CRI's, dilutions)
  • A strong desire to learn and to excel within the profession
  • Ability to recognize and establish priorities and execute patient triage
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to remain calm in emergencies
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision when necessary
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated computer and phone skills
  • High level of professionalism

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate of an accredited program for Veterinary Technologists
  • Demonstrated skills, experience and training that would qualify the individual for a position of responsibility within the surgical service
  • Strong anaesthetic background preferred

WORKING HOURS

  • Rotational shifts comprising of 4*10's or 5*8's
  • Rotational GA On-Call Shifts
  • All rotations are to be evenly shared amongst the surgical technician team

Job Types:

$27.00-$36.00 per hour
