Overview:


The Faculty of Math offers a wide variety of large multi-section first and second year courses, the administration of which is a non-trivial task.

The Instructional Support Coordinator - MATH (ISC - M) acts as a central point of contact for the administrative duties of such courses while at the same time providing continuity from one term to the next.


Administrative support includes:

advice to instructors regarding course specific practice and university/faculty policies and procedures; managing graduate teaching assistants (TAs), undergraduate markers and co-op students; on-boarding sessional instructors; coordination of operational activities; and maintenance of course repositories and archives.

ISC - M also takes an important role in teaching MATH courses.


There are multiple qualified internals within the role.

Responsibilities:


Teaching

  • Develop their teaching skills and maintain currency with research into teaching and learning
  • Teach up to three sections per year
  • Prepare instructional material according to guidelines set out by curricular committees or the teaching team
  • Assist with the creation of marking schemes and solution sets for assignments and tests
  • Facilitate development of assessment material when called upon
  • Provide feedback on changes to course materials based on prior offerings of the course and information from students

Personnel Management
The ISC - M will manage graduate teaching assistants (TAs), undergraduate markers and co-op students including, but not necessarily limited to the following activities:

  • Provide day-to-day support and supervision of personnel
  • Provide educational software and course specific training
  • Evaluate the performance of TAs, undergraduate markers and coop students
  • Supervise and evaluate coop work term reports
  • Provide feedback on initial employee budgets
  • Allocate employees for proctoring midterms and final examinations
  • Manage interpersonal issues arising from the conduct of TAs, undergraduate markers and coop students and involve other stakeholders as appropriate

Technology and Online Pedagogy

  • Maintain familiarity with the various technologies commonly used in core and service teaching including, but not limited to,
  • LEARN

  • Crowdmark
  • Mobius

  • Oversee setup, first level trouble shooting and access to training for all course personnel to any of the needed technologies
  • Provide advice to the teaching team based on current scholarship in teaching and learning

Course Support:
Instructors

  • The ISC
  • M will provide support services to course instructors including, but not limited to, the following:
  • Onboard new instructors
  • Communicate course expectations based on prior offerings to the teaching team
  • Maintain an archive of course material and provide suitable documents upon request
  • Draft and post administrative documents such as course outlines, course timetables, and agenda of teaching team meetings
  • Arrange for textbook orders, the posting of course notes or the posting of previously prepared digital assets as needed ensuring that related deadlines are met
  • Maintain the course web site in the University's designated learning management system (LMS)
  • Document and report academic integrity violations
  • Provide periodic updates about student progress (grades, feedback)
  • Provide knowledge and interpretation of university/faculty policies and procedures

Course Support:

Students


  • Respond to student enquiries related to
- course administration,
- requests for exceptions,
- requests for regrading,
- midterm and final examination conflicts,
- the AccessAbility Office, and
- academic content beyond the skill of the TAs

  • Direct students to the campus' various support services including, but not limited to, advisors, counsellors, the police and WUSA
  • Investigate complaints regarding the failure of learning technologies used in the course

Course Support:

Assessment

The Instructor/Coordinator will manage assessment activities including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Consult with the instructional team to decide the types of assessments to be used and who is to supply the required content for each assessment
  • Ensure that the deadlines are met for the creation of the assessments
  • Delegate the marking tasks of each assessment (in consultation with the instructional team)
  • Distribute assignments to students and solution sets and marking schemes for assignments and exams to markers
  • Organize and/or supervise the printing and marking of assignments which may include leading marking meetings and arranging rooms
  • Generate, maintain, and archive mark lists
  • Compute final grades according to the course outline
  • Assist in the grading of midterms and final examinations
  • Oversee the grade appeal/revision process
  • Submit final grades to Quest
  • Post solution sets and grades as required
  • Provide setup and support for assignment submission/marking syst
