Job Number:48895**- 1 temporary full-time position for 8 months, intended specifically for students currently enrolled in an environmental, ecological, conservation or related co-op or equivalent post-secondary work experience degree program, commencing in May 2024_

Are you passionate about wildlife and habitat conservation and interested in supporting the City of Edmonton's Conservation team at the Edmonton Valley Zoo?

The Edmonton Valley Zoo works to inspire the protection and conservation of wildlife.

We would like to hire a passionate conservation focused individual to support on site conservation outreach/education, green practices and in-situ ecological monitoring.

As a member of the Conservation team the co-op student will support Valley Zoo conservation priorities including wildlife monitoring, conservation action plan development, GIS and spatial analysis and wildlife conservation based research and analysis to support a variety of initiatives.

Responsibilities include:


  • Conduct research and assist in the preparation of conservation focused brochures, reports, newsletters, interpretive signage, social media posts, short videos and other associated material.
  • Promote public awareness and education on wildlife conservation, the environment, and sustainable use of natural resources
  • Support the Edmonton Valley Zoo and John Janzen Nature Centre's Education teams to incorporate conservation messaging into dedicated conservation focused Special Events and Awareness Days
  • Help plan and develop messaging and partnerships for conservation focused outreach events like Fall Migratory Bird Day, Caribou Day, National Forest Week, etc.
  • Organize and provide support for workshops, meetings, and other events to aid in the the creation of a Conservation Framework that will guide future conservation activities
  • Assist in behavioral monitoring work under the supervision of a visiting researcher
  • Assist with the Edmonton Valley Zoo's insitu Monitoring Program, including:
  • Conducting bird strike assessments
  • Using and maintaining a variety of wildlife monitoring equipment (e.g. wildlife monitoring cameras, acoustic monitoring equipment)
  • Assist in the processing of wildlife monitoring images and audio files
  • Researching and developing proposals to enhance habitat for native flora, fauna, and fungi on site
  • Download, organize, and process collected data in a monitoring database in coordination with project partners and other team members
  • Make presentations to colleagues, the public, and other stakeholders
  • Assist with the gathering and statistical analysis of data and information for Conservation team initiatives
  • Support, mentor, and work with Edmonton Valley Zoo volunteers where appropriate
  • Perform other supportive duties as assigned

Qualifications:


  • Current enrollment at a postsecondary institution, in a conservation biology, ecology, zoology, or equivalent work experience degree program
  • Excellent research, writing and data management skills

Assets

  • Related postgraduate degree in a relevant field of of study

Conditions of Employment:


  • This position will be a combination of working from home and onsite working conditions, with such additional field work

Additional Details:


Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week, Monday - Friday, some weekends may be required


Salary:
$ $26.599 Hourly
