Job Summary

Organizational Status


The Vancouver Stroke Program (VSP) Clinical Trials Unit is an academic coordinating centre for locally-initiated as well as Canadian and international clinical trials in stroke treatment, prevention and rehabilitation.

This position will also work in collaboration with the VSP team members to ensure the timely completion of project goals to meet funding agency and/or Sponsor requirements.

Work Performed

  • Leads screening and recruitment activities for enrollment of study participants;
  • Performs research tests and measurements including medical history and anthropometric measurements, Holter ECG setup, cognitive function testing, and questionnaire administration;
  • Works with large and complex datasets, performing analyses for research presentations at conferences or research workshops as required by Principal Investigator;
  • Operates equipment or tools, utilizes complex techniques for participant testing, and troubleshoots using prior knowledge and experience when necessary;
  • Schedules study participants' followup assessments and tests as outlined by study protocols, and any deviations from typical scenarios are navigated in accordance with the protocol; complex issues or deviations that may impact the study are escalated to the PI and/or study manager;
  • Reviews participant medical records for study eligibility and completes studyspecific case report forms, and requires excellent attention to detail to maintain integrity of the study and ensure patient safety;
  • Performs data entry in studyspecific electronic databases (e.g. REDCap, DFexplore, etc.) upon completion of study participants' followup assessments;
  • Requests medical records and test results for study participants, and is able to reasonably interpret findings that should be brought to the attention of the Principal Investigator;
  • Collects data and submits adverse event or Serious Adverse Event reports as per applicable research protocol, and is responsible for promptly notifying Investigator(s) for appropriate followup and medical management;
  • Deidentifies and submits medical imaging;
  • Obtains ethics and departmental approvals and renewals;
  • Tracks personnel training/certifications on a monthly basis and follows up with staff to obtain uptodate documentation;
  • Obtains signatures from personnel for regulatory documents;
  • Archives study documents at study completion according to UBC records retention policies;
  • Communicates with principal investigators and research team on progress of studies, and creates reports when necessary;
  • Schedules meetings and produces minutes to distribute in a timely fashion;
  • Purchases supplies and minor equipment, submits requisitions to finance department for reimbursement and payment of research expenses, and is involved in program operations;
  • Trains and oversees some research staff including but not limited to coop students, volunteers, new and junior research assistants;
  • Works with large and complex datasets, performing analyses for research presentations at conferences or research workshops as required by Principal Investigator.

Minimum Qualifications


Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum of three (3) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
