Chief Operating Officer
Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS) is currently seeking a Chief Operating Officer.

This new position will help shape and integrate the operations and culture of one of the most vital social service organizations in the Edmonton Region.

What We Do

YESS is a not-for-profit agency working with youth facing difficult realities.

Based in Edmonton, YESS provides immediate and low-barrier 24/7 shelter, a drop-in resource centre, temporary supportive housing,, and individualized wrap-around supports for young people aged 15-24.


We work collaboratively within a network of care focused on the prevention of youth homelessness by providing youth with the necessary supports to stabilize their housing, improve their wellbeing, build life skills, connect with community, and avoid re-entry into homelessness.

What You Will Do


With an operating budget of over 6 M, a current staff compliment of ~80 employees, three buildings, and many partners, donors, vendors, and volunteers, YESS is a diverse, complex, and growing organization that is both deeply rooted in its 40-year history and ready for meaningful transformation.

Reporting to the CEO, the COO is a key member of the executive team and has the overall accountability of two areas:


  • Employee relations, retention, management, and development
  • Organizational integration through communication, process, and change management
Direct Reports include a Director of HR and Development (future hire), 2 Human Resources Coordinators, Internal Communications Officer (future hire), IT (external contracts)


Responsibilities include:
Strategy and Planning**- Participate in a collaborative process in the formulation of YESS' strategic direction, and implement the capital and operating plans that support the strategic road map

  • Facilitate organizational change initiatives to support the growth, development, and integration of staff and the organization
  • As part of the Executive team provide updates on operational, financial, human resources, compliance, resource development, and other relevant YESS matters that are applicable to employee relations, development, communication, and process integration

Organizational Culture Development

  • Build and foster relationships that accelerate the cultural mandate of YESS and drive leadership and staff to new heights of capability
  • In collaboration with the executive team, ensure a safe, transparent, diverse, and equitable working environment
  • Communicate through a variety of mediums to ensure all levels of the organization and other stakeholders are kept abreast of key changes and other relevant information
  • Foster and develop collaboration between departments and other internal groups to ensure an integrated approach to maximizing organizational effectiveness and efficiency

Human Resources Management**- In collaboration with the CEO, and executive team, research and implement new practices, services, and innovative approaches to attract, retain, motivate, and develop employees for the successful integration of operations

  • Lead the development of new service initiatives and evaluations
  • Evaluate HR programs and processes, audit current training and development programs and recommend improvements and refinements to ensure they reflect YESS' values and philosophy and contribute to the organization's vision and mission
  • Cultivate a pipeline of diverse and highquality talent throughout YESS
  • Provide direction, guidance, and/or assistance in the recruitment, hiring, orientation, training and daytoday supervision of HR programs and services staff

IT Management

  • Manage all aspects of IT for the Agency, working with external service providers
  • Negotiate appropriate contracts and service deliverables, working closely with the Director of Finance
  • Ensure assets are appropriately distributed and managed

Internal C
ommunications

  • Design and develop
    internal communications for all staff, the Executive Team, and the Board of Directors
  • Provide messaging that keeps employees informed and motivated
  • Develop messaging and scripts for the executive use to meet internal deliverables
  • Align all internal messaging to the Agency's goals and objectives
  • Develop a variety of communication channels and methods to facilitate deliverables

Supervision

  • Approve and monitor department overtime, health maintenance and vacation leaves
  • Coach and mentor direct reports for personal and professional growth

Fiscal Management

  • Provide executive oversight in the development and implementation of annual HR, IT, and internal communication budgets and approval of expenditures
  • Develop strategies for increasing financial stability and sustainability of department programs and services

Administration

  • May act on behalf of the CEO when she is not available
  • Attend executive team meetings to address organizational issues and collaborate on organizational initiatives
