Central West Specialized Developmental Services (CWSDS) is a leader in providing supportive living, community participation supports and specialized services, assessment and treatment to people who have developmental and intellectual disabilities, dual diagnosis, and/or challenging behaviours throughout the municipalities of Halton, Peel and Dufferin and the regions of Waterloo and Wellington.


As a specialist in the field of developmental an intellectual disabilities, CWSDS has experienced continued growth over the last five years.

As such, we are looking to hire a
Dual Diagnosis Justice Coordinator, full time. This position will report to the Regional Manager, Central West Networks of Specialized Care.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Working collaboratively alongside police, other court support workers and discharge planners to implement bail release and court diversion plans for people with developmental disabilities and/or dual diagnosis
  • Capacity building and support to community services providers in developmental services, mental health and justice services about the unique and often complex needs of people with a dual diagnosis.
  • Providing consultation and education to the Police/OPP, the criminal justice sector, mental health and developmental services, regarding both individual and system specific issues to ensure that the needs of people with a developmental disability and/or dual diagnosis are being addressed.
  • Engaging people and families in addressing immediate and longterm needs (e.g. shelter, food, medical attention) while linkages to longer term supports are being organized
  • Assisting service providers to better understand the vulnerabilities faced by this population.
  • Partnership and planning with mental health court support workers, local correctional and custody facilities for appropriate discharge planning to community and linkage to appropriate services and supports including Developmental Services Ontario (DSO).
  • Coordinating a continuum of services based on individual choice and the need for adequate cross sector supports
  • Linking people to preferred services and resources, as well as desired services within the mental health and developmental sectors
  • Developing appropriate strategies for people who may be resistant to services and who live at risk in the community
  • Assisting, where appropriate, criminal justice officials in securing access to needed forensic assessment or other specialized assessments.
  • Provide assistance, support, and education to the person's formal and informal support system.
  • Enhancing people's understanding of s their legal rights in the areas of housing, finances, work/education, and medical/psychiatric services (e.g. Mental Health Act).
  • Advocating on behalf of people with a developmental disability/dual diagnosis for the protection of personal and legal rights, and for access to needed services, resources, and supports to live successfully in the community.
  • Participation at internal, regional and provincial meetings.
  • Using equipment and wearing protective devices or clothing that the employer deems as required, including the use of fittested N95 respirator and/or similar equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Completion of a formal University Degree in Social Services or related field. A combination of various work and education experience will also be considered
  • Progressive training and development in organization systems and/or community development
  • Sound working knowledge of the criminal justice system, the Mental Health Act including involuntary admission process, the assessment provisions of the Criminal Code, the Developmental Services Act, related health care legislation and forensic issues
  • Thorough understanding of the biopsychosocial factors contributing to mental illness, developmental disability, and the life situation of individuals with a dual diagnosis
  • Ability to work collaboratively with formal and informal community services/resources within the criminal justice, mental health and developmental sectors
  • Welldeveloped risk assessment and advocacy skills
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal and problemsolving skills.
  • A satisfactory Police Records Check (Vulnerable Sector Screening)
  • A valid Ontario's driver's license and vehicle to travel through the Region
  • Providing proof of vaccination for COVID19 and maintaining vaccination status as necessary from time to time during employment.

LOCATION:
This position works remotely. Occasional travel is required within Halton and Peel communities, to support people within the caseload as needed.


HOURS OF WORK:
Monday to Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, 40 hours/ week with one-hour paid lunch break. Flexibility is required as needed.
