    About The CMM
    The Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing the eight Mi'kmaq communities of mainland Nova Scotia. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi'kmaq communities' initiatives towards self determination and enhancement of community. The CMM's Department of Aquatic Resources and Fisheries Management (DARFM) is currently looking for a motivated and knowledgeable candidate to fill the role of DARFM Manager of Ocean Sciences.

    Position Overview
    Under the direction of and reporting to the Director of DARFM, the DARFM Manager of Ocean Sciences is responsible for the oversight and guidance of the Ocean Sciences branch of DARFM.

    Overview of Responsibilities:

    • Lead and Manage the Ocean Sciences branch of DARFM according to the strategic direction recommended by the Director and ratified by the CMM Board of Directors

    • Provide oversight and guidance on projects and ensure staff are adhering to funding deadlines and projects remain within budget.

    • Plan and maintain systems and procedures for operating efficiency.

    • Prepare an annual report for the Ocean Science branch of DARFM for review and approval by the Director.

    • Explore funding opportunities and develop projects as recommended by CMM Communities and/or Director.

    • Facilitate the preparation and analysis of funding proposals and reports.

    • Meet annual DARFM objectives, goals and deliverables as outlined in funding agreements and as directed by the DARFM Advisory Committees and Board of Directors

    • Supervise, plan and oversee the operations and fiscal requirements including budgets of the Ocean Sciences branch, this will include but is not limited to the following:
    o Coordinate andoversee the work and priorities of the staff.
    o Participate in interviews for staff, as appropriate, and recommend successful candidates to the Director for approval.
    o Assists with developing JobDescriptions and postings forbranch staff.
    o Assists with performance evaluations for branch staff.
    o Reviews and approves annual work plans for branch staff.
    o Ensures compliance with Personnel and HR Policies, and reports noncompliance to Director for further action.
    o Recommends employees leave requests.

    • Identify and recommend department policies, practices and staff training to the Director.

    • Liaise with and develop working relationships with project teams, project partners, and external technologists and researchers, as needed.

    • Write reports and deliver presentations and briefings for management, as required to the DARFM Advisory Committee as well as the CMM BOD

    • Participate on committees and boards as may be required and/or requested by the Director.

    • Continually seek education and training to remain culturally responsible and sensitive to needs of client(s)

    • Any other related duties as required and as requested by the Executive Director or DARFM Director, such as participating on committees or special projects.

    Position Requirements:

    • Post-secondary degree or diploma in management, science, education, or a related field

    • Two-years of relevant working experience in a related field

    • Education and experience in the field of scientific research

    • Experience working in or with First Nation communities.

    • Strong work ethic and ability to work in an environment requiring discretion and confidentiality.

    • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

    • Ability to apply creativity and innovative thinking to community focused solutions.

    • Demonstrated strong initiative, motivation, conscientiousness, and dedication.

    • Ability to be organized, adaptable, flexible, manage multiple priorities to ensure clients are well served and relationships are developed and maintained.

    • Ability to think analytically and critically while problem solving to identify specific needs and potential solutions.

    • Able to develop relationships and this will include strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, collaboration, facilitation, conflict resolution, and active listening

    • Travel within Nova Scotia will be required.

    • There is an occasional requirement to work outside of normal working hours due to the requirements of the member communities and clients.

    • Fluent Mi'kmaw speaker and writer is an asset.

    • Have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

    • If all qualifications are equal. preference will be given to persons of Aboriginal ancestry.

    Salary/Employment Term:
    Salary Range: $60,000 – $75,000 per year. This is a Permanent Position (pending successful one-year probationary contract).
