The Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) is a community-based, non-share capital corporation that operates, manages, maintains, and invests in the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport and affiliate businesses.

Operating on a multi-site property, the WAA is responsible for airport operations, security, facilities, parking, ground transportation and communications.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Facility Performance, the Building & Systems Controls Technician provides enhanced operational & maintenance support and expertise to the WAA Facilities Maintenance Department, as it relates to various complex controls technologies & equipment, as well as associated systems, supporting the LEED silver certified Air Terminal Building


This includes:

Building Management Systems (BMS), with enhanced monitoring and control capabilities, Lighting & Power/Stand-by Power/Energy Management Systems with a focus on sustainability and energy reduction, supporting the Baggage Handling Systems (BHS) with a focus on reliability & system uptime, Passenger Boarding Bridge Systems (PBB), limiting downtime, programmable logic controllers (PLC) & variable frequency drives (VFD) related to motion control & automation technologies and controls.


Responsibilities include:


  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance, troubleshoot, monitor, and modify as necessary on airport operational systems, including BMS, BHS, PBB, and various systems' operational devices, system interfaces, and associated control devices and systems; facilities lighting control equipment and Power & Energy Management equipment and systems;
  • Advise Manager on observational and technical analysis for various system solutions including planned maintenance and capital program upgrades, as well as energy management monitoring and optimization initiatives;
  • Support installation and configuration software/firmware in various controls systems and conduct routine regular maintenance of associated ancillary equipment;
  • Utilize measurement and control equipment to diagnose route cause analysis for corrective, remediation, or upgrade potential activities on various systems and equipment supporting WAA operations, as well as WAA base building facilities maintenance;
  • Participate in new initiatives in meeting airport operational performance metrics, as measured by airport measures and benchmarks; such as baggage to manual encode, reduction in missed tracked/unknown baggage throughout the BHS, and minimizing VFD faults by analyzing and modifying programming/controls, supporting airport operations.

Selection Criteria include:


  • Education in a postsecondary, community college, or trade program or related field; such as instrumentation, electronic, electrical Technologist or Technician Diploma;
  • 5 years' experience related to manufacturing systems & processes with overall building controls systems experience or previous related job experience in a similar role;
  • Experience with the use of Honeywell & JCI Building automation, Allen Bradley/Rockwell automation and Douglas Lighting Control System;
  • Excellent team work and team building skills, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Proven critical thinking & problem solving skills;
  • Demonstrated proficiency to interpret, analyze and troubleshoot complex controls equipment and systems to minimize operational impacts;
  • Strong computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office suite; and
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
