At the Provincial and Demonstration Schools Branch, we provide a specialized student lodging school program for students with severe learning disabilities whose educational needs cannot be adequately met in their local boards.

What can I expect to do in this role?:

  • Provide supervision, guidance and instruction in social and life skills for students with severe learning disabilities in a lodging program setting;
  • Plan, organize and implement customized individual and group programs designed to meet the personal, emotional and developmental needs of students using a multidisciplinary approach, including by not limited to physical activities and recreational programs, safety and behavioral plans, social skills lesson plans;
  • Supervise, guide and instruct students in the lodging program, acting as an appropriate role model, modeling appropriate interpersonal relationships, cooperatives, social skills;
  • Provide sound physical care and maintain a safe and secure environment for students in the lodging program;
  • Conduct structured study time for all students and assist students during study time using a variety of learning tools;
  • Provide an opportunity for students to participate in extracurricular activities which allow for the appropriate transference and practice of acquired skills;
  • Organize, schedule recreational / leisure / educational programs and activities that meet the varied interests and physical needs of students;
  • Maintaining meaningful and appropriate communication with students, parents and other professionals by, knowing appropriate communication skills with students; preparing reports on student progress for parents, liaising with parent to update them on student progress in the lodging program; participating in case conferences and reviews with other professionals.

How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:


  • College certification from a recognized educational facility and/or equivalent training, education and working experience in a child related field
  • Current First Aid, CPR and Crisis Prevention Intervention Training and/or Behaviour Management Training or equivalent

Skills and Qualifications:
Your background and experience enable you to meet the following requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate effective social/recreational/leisure programs geared to meet the needs of students with severe learning disabilities;
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation/policies/procedures/guidelines/practices that address student care and safety;
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and other professionals;
  • Sound judgment and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team;
  • Willingness and ability to work shifts.
