Position Description:

***St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton is a teaching affiliate of McMaster University, and a tertiary referral center for Central South Ontario offering services on three main sites including St. Joseph's Hospital (Charlton Campus), the Centre for Ambulatory Health Services (King Campus), and the Centre for Mountain Health Services (West 5th Campus).


The Physician Assistant (PA) works collaboratively with the designated supervising psychiatrist and associated team to deliver healthcare and mental health services to patients in the psychiatric emergency department, acute mental health inpatient ward, and in psychiatry outpatient clinics.

Under the delegation of the supervising physician, the PA is authorized to extend physician services through the comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, intervention, referral, management, treatment, and evaluation of patients requiring psychiatric assessment and intervention in both inpatient and outpatient settings.


This position would entail working within the supervising psychiatrist and psychiatry team to assess, intervene, and treat patients in the department.

Working with Physicians, various clinical specialties, allied health and nursing, the Physician Assistant role is critical to timely patient care and optimized patient flow.

St.

Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton clinical settings are supported by a unique interdisciplinary team including social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and nursing.


All acts are conducted under the supervision of a registered Physician, and in accordance with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario's policy on delegation.

The PA will practice under medical directives specific to the medicine department role.


The PA will have a variety of clinical responsibilities, which are as follows:

  • Obtain comprehensive and focused patient histories including both consults and follow-ups. Gather information including patient demographics, chief complaint, past medical/ surgical history, history of present illness (including suicide risk assessments), family history, psychosocial history, medications, medications, allergies, and systems review.
  • Obtain, collate, and summarize collateral information from hospital records/ outpatient clinics as well as family members regarding previous hospitalizations and previous interventions, with patient consent.
  • Integrate and follow various psychiatric rating scales (ie DSM5) following appropriate training.
  • Preform appropriate and thorough physical examinations, while ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests and labs to formulate broad differential diagnoses based on the patient's chief complaint (under physician supervision).
  • Formulate diagnoses based on evidencebased medicine and efficiently present these findings to the supervising physician.
  • Manage acute mental health concerns in a variety of different psychiatric environments (under physician supervision)
  • Connect patients to allied health or outpatient clinics and other support services (under physician supervision).

QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS

  • Graduate of an accredited Canadian or US PA training program
  • Certification (CCPA or PA-C) or eligible for certification through the PA Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or United States (NCCPA)
  • Preference given to Internal Medicine or hospitalist experience
  • Demonstrates superior communication skills
  • Demonstrates support for the Mission Statement of St Joseph's Healthcare
  • Able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary healthcare team environment and independently within their scope of care
  • Willing to work a mix of daytime, evening, overnight, weekend or alternative hours as needed
  • Will bring energy and enthusiasm to this position
  • Passion for a variety of subspecialties of psychiatry
