Edgewood, located in beautiful Nanaimo, BC,
on the traditional and unceded territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation, is an internationally renowned, accredited and licensed private in-patient treatment centre.

Edgewood specializes in treatment for addition and concurrent diagnoses through a trauma informed lens, with full time clinical, medical and psychiatric staff.

Position Summary and General Duties:


Reporting to the Clinical Supervisor, the primary function of the Clinical Counselor is to identify, evaluate and treat clients, using a trauma informed lens and approach, who have sought treatment for problems related to substance use/process addictions and concurrent mental health challenges.

The Clinical Counselor is engaged in the following therapeutic work:


  • Assisting the client to recognize problematic substance use and/or behavioral addictions that are maladaptive and destructive.
  • Helping the client identify areas of change and the impact substance usedisorder and concurrent mental health diagnoses have had on their lives.
  • Developing therapeutic rapport and continuing to help the client to identify areas of change.
  • Using a variety of counseling techniques to help the client make appropriate life changes and learn new skills to enhance their Recovery Capital moving forward.
  • Group work, 1:1 sessions, psychoeducational workshops, lectures
  • Providing opportunities to patients to practice new skills in the areas of conflict resolution and emotional regulation using evidencebased techniques such as DBT, CPT and CBT strategies
  • Engaging in continued training provided by EHN, and other educational opportunities and benefits of interest to the clinician
  • Ethical practice
  • Masters Degree in social work, psychology or related discipline is required
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with employing a variety of treatment modalities and treatment/recovery programs including:
  • CBT: usage of CBT in conjunction with co occurring mental health issues
  • DBT: experience in distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and mindfulness
  • CPT training an asset
  • The 12 Steps, SMART Recovery and/or Dharma/Refuge Recovery
  • Concurrent mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety and/or trauma
  • Substance use disorders (SUD)
  • Facilitating group therapy, lecturing and educational presentations
  • Demonstrated ability and training in trauma and providing clinical expertise through a trauma informed lens;
  • Well honed conflict resolution and deescalation, and personal regulation skills;
  • Ability to use electronic medical systems and Microsoft office (word, excel, power point and outlook);
  • A passion and relentless pursuit for improving the life chances for all clients through support grounded in sound treatment practices;
  • Proven ability to work well as an integral part of a team which includes senior management, managers, supervisors, staff and outside agencies;
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, communication, and problem solving skills;
  • The ability to be flexible, adaptable and nimble;
  • Commitment to professional development and growth;
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate verbally and in writing;
  • Must be able to understand and follow directions;
  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others;
  • Ability to fulfill the functional demands of the position;
  • Negative TB test;
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Level C;
  • Criminal record check through the Ministry of Justice;
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License in good standing; and
  • Proof of COVID19 Vaccine.
