    CBCL is continuously on the lookout for talented individuals to join our dynamic and talented Ports & Marine team. We have an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate to Senior Marine Engineer to join our Ports & Marine Division.

    This position can be in Halifax, NS or any of our other office locations. The successful candidate will have experience in the design, inspection, rehabilitation, and construction of marine structures. Consideration will also be given to Intermediate Structural Engineers demonstrating a similar specialization. You will join a team that takes pride in their ability to work together to develop innovative solutions to engineering challenges.

    Your Key Responsibilities:

    • Prepare proposals to secure marine work from various clients;
    • Meet with clients to establish work scope, budgets, and schedule for various types of marine projects;
    • Determine layout of harbour marine elements including wharves, breakwaters, dredge areas, uplands, navigation aids, wharf services, etc.;
    • Carry out a mooring analysis to determine line forces;
    • Work in conjunction with other disciplines such as geotechnical, coastal, civil, electrical, environmental, etc. to determine design parameters for the structures;
    • Develop loads using various codes and standards including gravity, wind, snow, radial ice, berthing, mooring and seismic;
    • Preparing 3D structural models of the marine structure;
    • Carry out the design of typical marine structures with minimal supervision including the design of decks, pile caps, piles, bracing, etc. using concrete, timber and steel, and design secondary structural members such as fenders, bollards, cleats, etc.;
    • Design of timber crib structures;
    • Design concrete caissons;
    • Design of steel sheet pile wall structures;
    • Design of Berlin Wall type structures;
    • Develop complete drawings and specifications for projects to various client standards;
    • Oversee the development of cost estimates for the various projects;
    • Carry out construction oversight services including review of shop drawings, answering technical queries, site inspection, review of progress claims, etc.;
    • Mentoring junior staff and carrying out QA/QC on their work;
    • Create and vet spreadsheets to design various structural elements;
    • Carrying out a condition inspection of existing structures, perform structural evaluation and prepare a report summarizing the findings; and
    • Knowledge of structural health monitoring of marine structures would be an asset.

    Your Capabilities and Credentials:

    • Registration or eligibility for registration with Engineers Nova Scotia;
    • Minimum five (5) years for intermediate and ten (10) years of relevant experience for senior;
    • Thorough knowledge of current design codes of practice, including Bridge Code (CSA S6-19), Concrete Code (CSA A23.3), Steel Code (CSA S16), and Timber Code (CSA O86). Familiarity with World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure (PIANC), and European codes would be an advantage;
    • Wharf inspection experience with a strong understanding of material conditions and defects. Experience with multiple inspection methodologies considered an asset;
    • The ability to work well with drafting personnel;
    • Interest and willingness to mentor and effectively develop the skills of Junior Engineers and Technologists;
    • The ability to lead the design on a Marine project from conception to construction;
    • The ability to coordinate multi-dripline work on Marine projects;
    • Strong analytical and computer modeling skills (LUSAS Bridge /SFrame / SAP preferred);
    • Familiarity with design of timber/steel piles, timber cribs, concrete caissons, steel sheet pile walls, Berlin Type walls;
    • An appreciation for considering construction during design;
    • Ability to effectively represent the company at the client level;
    • An understanding of commitment required to meet project schedules and budgets;
    • Excellent communication skills; ability to write effective reports and proposals.
