Duties
The Engineering Specialist/Senior Investigator, Rail Infrastructure is responsible for leading and supporting rail occurrence investigations. This includes responding to rail occurrences across Canada, developing scientific investigation reports, and communicating investigation results. This position is also responsible for providing rail infrastructure subject matter expertise to other rail investigators and operations managers in the rail and pipeline investigations branch.
Work environment
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is part of the core public service administration named in Schedule IV of the Financial Administration Act (FAA) and is also subject to the PSEA. This being said the TSB is an independent arm's length agency that reports to Parliament through the President of the King's Privy Council for Canada. The organization aspires to be a modern world-class organization that evolves and adapts as it strives to influence changes that advance transportation safety. The TSB has a strong reputation in Canada and around the world.
The TSB is a small organization with approximately 220 employees and 5 Board Members, including the Chair. The organization operates in a decentralized manner through 10 locations across Canada. Employees work in a collegial and collaborative environment.Intent of the process
The intent of this process is to establish a pool of partially qualified candidates. Similar positions may be staffed through this process with various tenures, language profiles and/or requirements, location, and security requirements. Please note that the assessment tools and results of this pool will not be available to other departments until six months following the initial appointment.

Information you must provide In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)
A recognized University degree in Civil Engineering.
Eligibility for certification as a professional engineer in Canada in an engineering specialty relevant to the position.
Minimum of 7 years of experience in the heavy haul rail industry in the area of planning, inspection or maintenance of railway tracks and/or structures.
Experience in writing technical or investigation reports.The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)
Knowledge of North American railway track maintenance and repair practices, regulations and standards, and infrastructure characteristics.
Ability to analyze technical and/or safety issues and assess their impacts.
Ability to plan and effectively manage work in a high-pressure environment. Ability to work effectively in a team environment. Ability to lead major projects or investigations. Ability to communicate effectively orally. Ability to communicate effectively in writing. Effective interpersonal relationships.

Possess a valid driver's license in Canada. Be able and agree to travel within Canada and abroad, including travel by car, rail, ship and air. Willingness to be available on standby, on a rotational basis.
