The North America Project Controls Lead will report within the Project Management Office to establish and manage a Project Controls practice across North America utilizing existing or new Project Controls specialists within GHD's regional structure.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Hire and manage Project Controls staff either directly or through the regions.
  • Develop/refine and implement best practice project controls processes and tools for large and major projects specific to the engineering design delivery for the North American business.
  • Responsible to implement all project control aspects of the project or portfolio of projects including Scheduling, Cost Control, Change Management, Document Control/Management, and Risk Management in accordance with GHD policies and procedures and good industry practices.
  • Implements coaching or mentoring on best practice project controls processes within the project team or with other project controls staff as required.
  • Project Controls staff or lead will be responsible to:
  • Take a hands-on approach to all or portions of the project controls functions depending on project complexity and staff assigned.
  • Work closely with the PM on all major project functions, with a primary focus on managing and providing support on the project controls functions.
  • Make recommendations on the economic, financial and other implications of the project.
  • Review with the PM and/or PE the budget and schedule status on a regular basis, identifying gaps and providing solutions to achieving the scope, budget and schedule requirements.
  • Make recommendations on change notices in compliance with best practice change management techniques.
  • Work effectively with the finance department, especially the project analysts, to ensure project budgets and invoices are accurate and coordinates with the PM to ensure invoices are issued to the client.
  • If required, coordinates the preparation of capital cost estimates by verifying the list of quantity estimates prepared by each discipline and forwarding it to the person responsible for estimating.
  • Exercise independent judgment in the selection, classification, compilation and analysis of data obtained from a variety of sources. Determines work procedures and makes recommendations for improvements.

Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's (B.Sc.) degree or equivalent diploma from a recognized college or university
  • Minimum of 15 years broad and extensive technical, management and project experience
  • Minimum of 10 years working within project controls and 5 years within a design environment
  • Experience in providing project controls/services for design delivery for larger, multidiscipline projects specifically for industrial/process plants, facilities, or buildings; from design inception through to construction completion.
  • Experience in hiring and managing staff of project controls professionals.
  • Demonstrated experience working and/or managing the project controls functions with hands on experience on the following:
  • Detailed knowledge of scheduling methods, cost control processes, risk management procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing project metrics including but not limited to earned value, CPI, SPI.
  • Detailed understanding of project controls as it applies to a design environment, especially in DB projects.
  • High level of proficiency and experience with cost analysis (eg. MS Excel) and planning scheduling (eg. MS Project or Primavera P3/P6) tools, including the porting of data from EC industry ERP or cost accounting systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in use of document control and document management systems within a major project design capacity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to deal with uncertainty, changing and multiple priorities.
  • Team building, staff management and mentoring skills.
  • PMP, PMI or similar qualifications is considered an asset.
