Forensic DNA - Laboratory Technician

As a Forensic DNA - Laboratory Technician, your main responsibilities are to:

Performs all procedures related to DNA analysis including sampling of all types of comparison samples, DNA extraction of comparison and unknown samples (FTA, organic conventional and differential), quantification, PCR amplification, gel/capillary electrophoresis and analysis generating human DNA profiles (STR genotypes) for forensic casework.

Participates in validation of new DNA systems/procedures/instrumentation, as required.

Provides court testimony as required.

  • Using appropriate sampling techniques processes any type of forensic comparison samples for DNA analysis.
  • Using appropriate item/sample handling procedures, processes samples through all the steps of the applicable DNA analytical procedures (extraction [FTA, organic conventional and differential], quantification, amplification, gel/capillary electrophoresis and analysis) to generate DNA profiles suitable for interpretation for forensic casework.
  • Depending on seniority and experience, may be responsible for processing bone, teeth, fixed tissues for DNA analysis.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed notes of all testing performed; maintains continuity and integrity of casework materials to prevent mislabeling, item/sample mix up, contamination, loss or degradation.
  • Organises work and coordinates with others within the Department to meet TATs for forensic casework.
  • Complies with BV Labs' quality system and the accreditation requirements of relevant accrediting bodies (i.e. Standards Council of Canada) by following the Quality Manual for the Department, all relevant SOPs and WIs and using and completing accurately all forms relevant to the required duties.
  • Prepares reagents and supplies (autoclaving, etc).
  • Ensures adequate reagents and laboratory supplies are available by monitoring quantities and submitting purchasing requests.
  • Follows good housekeeping practices for laboratory areas and own office area.
  • Uses correctly and maintains instruments and laboratory equipment in good working condition.
  • Reviews scientific literature and other relevant publications to maintain current knowledge in the field. Attends conferences/workshops as appropriate.
  • Reviews, recommends and implements revisions of SOPs, WIs and forms.
  • As required will assist in training and mentoring of junior staff.
  • Participates as required in the development/validation of new procedures and/or instrumentation.
  • If required provides testimony in court about laboratory procedures and protocols conducted in the case under investigation.
  • Other support duties such as admin reviews, labcleaning, generator testing etc. as required.

You are the ideal Forensic DNA - Laboratory Technician, if you have a:

  • 4 year bachelors degree in either: Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science. Degree must include courses in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology plus coursework and/or training in statistics and population genetics
  • Laboratory experience in a forensic laboratory is an asset
  • Sound knowledge of sample handling procedures to ensure continuity and integrity of samples through compliance with laboratory procedures and quality assurance protocols.
  • Knowledge of and experience with laboratory Occupational Health and Safety practices in order to handle hazardous materials by taking the necessary precautions.
  • Excellent manual dexterity, record keeping, calculations and problem solving, detail oriented and organized.
  • Requirement to be flexible to accommodate changing priorities.
  • Independent worker for routine procedures following established SOPs and Work Instructionss but knows when to seek assistance on nonroutine analyses from supervisor, other staff or external contacts. Will participate in finding solution to any problems encountered.
  • Confident, honest and thoughtful in communications.

As a Forensic DNA - Laboratory Technician, your working conditions are:

  • Requirement to be focused for extended periods of time and handle numerous samples at once over a number of manipulations without making any mistakes
  • Exposure at times to visually unpleasant and malodorous material and potentially disturbing narr
