Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) is a community-based, non-share capital corporation that operates, manages, maintains, and invests in the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport and affiliate businesses.

Operating on a multi-site property, WAA is responsible for airport operations, security, facilities, parking, ground transportation and communications.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Communications, the Communications Specialist is responsible for the implementation and support of various aspects of the organization's communications plan for the Airport.


Responsibilities include:


  • Maintain, update and recommend changes, additions or modifications to the organization's communication channels to tell the story of the airport;
  • Assist in responding to media inquiries and requests for interviews, prepare media releases and backgrounders, maintain media lists, and media monitoring and reporting;
  • Support the Manager in organizing key events, writing speeches and other functions;
  • Maintain, update and recommend changes, additions or modifications to the organization's internal communication channels aligned with the organization's strategic priorities;
  • Monitor external and internal communications channels for issues which could potentially have an impact on the airport to allow for the opportunity for a proactive solution;
  • Participate in simulated emergency exercises and remain current with the crisis communications plan;
  • Maintain the media library; and
  • Generate and provide ad hoc reports as required on various communication metrics.

Selection Criteria include:


  • Postsecondary education in Communications, Journalism or a related field;
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience;
  • Excellent storytelling skills with an aptitude for identifying and producing creative and compelling content using a variety of mediums;
  • Commitment to service excellence to our internal and external customers producing timely quality results;
  • Strong business acumen, understanding the organization's business fundamental to the marketplace;
  • Interpersonal skills building confidence and trust of others through honesty, integrity, and authenticity;
  • Active teamplayer in achieving departmental and organizational goals;
  • Experience using Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative Suite;
  • Experience in video production an asset; and
  • Bilingual (French-English) competency, both oral and written, preferred.
