Position Summary

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides daytoday support and advising to assigned client groups including design and implementation of new HR initiatives with a focus on workforce planning for contract employees
  • Delivers and develops training/facilitation sessions regarding human resources issues, policies, initiatives, planning and change management
  • Consults with managers regarding performance reviews and follows up on key issues or trends affecting employee performance
  • Works closely with new managers to assist in their orientation to the College and ensure understanding of Human Resources policies and procedures
  • Works closely with managers on organizational/job design aligned with their strategic and operational needs, providing support in position analysis and drafting job descriptions
  • Acts as primary contact for employees within the assigned client groups for concerns related to the employee's employment and career with Loyalist College; provides guidance, support, and advice to employees regarding Human Resources policies and facilitates corresponding procedures
  • Works closely with local Union Executives on various labour relations matters and maintains a respectful and effective working relationship
  • Prepares managers for and participates in grievance meetings, faculty workload meetings and arbitration hearings; prepares grievance responses, ensuring timelines are followed
  • Provides guidance to managers and employees on confidential and sensitive matters which may include investigations, discipline, termination
  • Followsup on various staff leaves and participates as needed in return to work and work accommodation processes
  • Benchmarks and measures various HR practices and procedures as part of a departmental efficiency and effectiveness improvement programs
  • Provides overflow support for Talent Acquisition; occasionally is responsible for the endtoend recruitment process; assists with orientation and onboarding

Qualifications

  • A relevant combination of education and experience, normally acquired through a 4year degree (such as human resources management, industrial relations, BComm) and 7 years' experience in roles providing comprehensive HR advice to managers and employees in a unionized environment
  • Certified Human Resources Professional/Leader preferred
  • Superior problemsolving, research, communication and interpersonal skills including conflict resolution and negotiation skills
  • Excellent judgment, discretion, confidentiality and attention to detail
  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships
  • Sound knowledge of and expertise in labour and employee relations
  • Computer literacy (selfsufficient in word processing, HRIS, presentation software, etc.)
  • Negotiation and problemsolving skills gained from collaborating across multiple constituencies
  • Selfdirected and a team player
  • Knowledge and ability to work inclusively in a diverse postsecondary environment
