Position Description:


SickKids has a great opportunity for a dynamic corporate/commercial lawyer to join the legal team at Canada's most research-intensive hospital.

The Legal Services team provides centralized legal support for the entire enterprise at SickKids, including the Hospital, Learning Institute, and Research Institute.

In this role as Legal Counsel (Hospital) you would advise clinical and corporate leaders, particularly in areas of technology and procurement, helping to advance our mission of improving the health of children in Ontario, Canada, and across the globe.


Here's What You'll Get to Do:

  • Provide a wide range of legal services to clients across the organization, particularly relating to IT, procurement, and general corporate/commercial transactions and regulatory issues.
  • Anticipate and address legal needs in support of the Hospital's business and strategic objectives through effective factfinding, research and the provision of highquality legal advice in a manner that reflects the organization's risk tolerance
  • Review, draft and negotiate agreements, working with legal colleagues and clients to understand the institution's needs and design and implement solutions
  • Identify potential areas of legal risk/opportunity and advise colleagues on risk tolerance and mechanisms to manage risk/opportunity
  • Provide management and staff with timely updates and insights on changing legal regimes and industry practice
  • Develop strong professional relationships with internal and external counterparts to facilitate ongoing communication throughout the organization, anticipate and proactively manage legal needs and risks, and keep current on best practices and emerging trends in legal practice within relevant sectors.

Here's What You'll Need:


Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctorate and a lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Strong conceptual thinking, communication, and decisionmaking skills
  • Serviceoriented and curious, with a propensity for practical problemsolving
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a high volume of competing priorities
  • Team player with excellent diplomacy and interpersonal skills

Assets

  • 35 years of postcall experience in private practice, inhouse, or a combination thereof
  • Experience working with a hospital or other healthcare sector organization
  • Familiarity with current and emerging technology and related regulatory issues, including cloud computing, cyber security, and AI
  • Strong solicitor background and experience, particularly in areas of IT law and procurement law, with robust drafting skills
