How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

The Field Assistant is responsible for providing field support for the Erosion Risk Management Program, primarily with respect to conducting technical reviews related to erosion and flood control structures, shoreline stabilization structures, and erosion hazards throughout TRCA's jurisdiction.


Major Responsibilities:


  • Assesses TRCA erosion control structures and shoreline stabilization structures.
  • Assess the existing condition of structure(s) (qualitative) to identify deficiencies which may be/are negatively impacting the structure.
  • Record measurements of the structure and measure deficiencies found.
  • Capture accurate GPS readings of the structure location and location of deficiencies.
  • Capture photographs of the structure and surrounding area to inform prioritization process.
  • Prepare brief technical summaries on structure condition and make recommendations on maintenance priority.
  • Efficiently and accurately enter data into TRCA's database.
  • Conducts monitoring of erosion hazard sites throughout TRCA's jurisdiction.
  • Ensure accurate measurements are taken and accurately recorded.
  • Update or create new Erosion Hazard Scoring Records.
  • Identify significant erosion/slope stability issues.
  • Identify potential violations.
  • Identifies and immediately reports emergency hazards, high priority sites, and potential violations to their supervisor.
  • Ensures inspection records include accurate coordinates, profile sketches, and site photographs.
  • Conducts inventories as requested on infrastructure condition, infrastructure risk due to watercourse activity, and erosion hazards which may put public safety or infrastructure at risk.

What will you need to succeed:
Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Actively pursuing a postsecondary education in Environmental/Civil Engineering, Geology, Physical Geography, or related discipline.
  • Completion of (minimum) first year of postsecondary education in one of the above programs.
Experience

  • Familiarity with flood and erosion control structures is considered an asset.
  • Familiar with map, plan, and air photo interpretation.
Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Ability to perform physical activities under adverse weather conditions that includes standing, walking, and using monitoring equipment throughout the day.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with multiple objectives and tight deadlines.
  • Valid Ontario Driver's License in good standing.
