Summary:

Within the context of a client and family centred model of care and, in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Providence Health Care, the person promotes a safe, respectful, and civil working environment for patients, residents, families, visitors and staff.


Reporting to the Program Leader, the Educator/Counsellor provides clinical education services to counsellors, clinicians, students and other staff within Foundry programs.

Plans, develops, evaluates and modifies education curriculum and learning resources.

Consults, confers and collaborates with program and team members and provides ongoing training and education in clinical counselling practice using a variety of teaching/learning strategies.

Assists with development of new clinical practices and provides staff with information on new or changed therapeutic procedures or practices.


The Educator/Counsellor also performs counselling duties including providing assessment/treatment for assigned clients/client groups, determining referral needs, and providing individual counselling, group and family interventions and education.

Formulates and implements treatment plans and provides comprehensive case consultation and follow-up support on treatment decisions in collaboration with members of the interdisciplinary team.


Qualifications / Skills and Education:
Education, Training and Experience

Master's Degree in Social Work, Clinical Counselling or Clinical Psychology.

Three (3) years recent, related experience working with youth and young adults across the mental health and substance use continuum including one year's experience teaching, preceptoring and/or coaching experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Completion of post-master's training in evidence-based therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Dialetical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Emotion-Focussed Family Therapy (EFFT).

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the broad range of issues pertaining to adolescent and young adult mental health and substance use issues, psychiatric diagnosis, and related evidencebased best treatment practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in use of relevant treatment modalities and interventions such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Dialetical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Emotion-Focussed Family Therapy (EFFT).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Systems Theory and an ability to incorporate this into mental health assessments and interventions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant Acts such as Mental Health Act, Adult Guardianship Act, Health Care Consent Act, Freedom of Information Act, Child, Family and Community Service Act, pertinent regulations, policies and procedures, and other statutory duties.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult education principles, curriculum development and teaching methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and facilitate learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments that include mental health and substance use standardized frameworks and tools.
  • Demonstrated skill in crisis intervention with adolescents and families, and therapeutic skills in individual, group and family interventions.
  • Ability to create and maintain trusting relationships with youth and families as they define themselves.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with others in a multicultural environment, independently and as part of an interprofessional team and understanding the frameworks of other disciplines.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.


Duties and Responsibilities: 1.Utilizes educational/curriculum theory and knowledge of relevant social work and clinical counselling practice to plan, develop, evaluate and modify education programs and learning resources for team members and/or clients/families; education programs include orientation/training for new team members, clinical evidence based training programs, educational support programs, continuing education sessions, preceptorship, and cross-cultural programs.
